Truck Parking Gets $200 Million in USDOT Funding
Truck Parking receives dedicated federal support as USDOT opens $200 million in funding for projects aimed at expanding commercial vehicle parking.
Truck Parking Funding: USDOT Opens $200 Million Grant Opportunity
The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has announced a new funding opportunity with more than $200 million dedicated to expanding commercial truck parking nationwide.
The funding is part of a larger $626.7 million investment through the INFRA program. According to USDOT, the funding is intended to support freight infrastructure, improve transportation safety, and address bottlenecks affecting the movement of goods.
More Than $200 Million Available for Truck Parking Funding
One of the most significant portions of the announcement for the trucking industry is a dedicated funding track focused on commercial motor vehicle parking.
USDOT has set aside $200 million specifically for projects that increase parking capacity for truck drivers and bus operators. The department said the funding is intended to help address ongoing parking shortages affecting drivers across the country.
Truck parking availability remains a major concern within the industry. Limited parking can make it difficult for drivers to find legal places to stop when reaching hours-of-service limits and may contribute to safety concerns along freight corridors.
The announcement comes shortly after congressional lawmakers advanced a transportation funding proposal that also included support for truck parking and freight infrastructure projects. However, that legislation must still move through the legislative process before becoming law.
What Is the INFRA Program?
The funding is being provided through the Nationally Significant Multimodal Freight and Highway Projects program, commonly known as INFRA.
The program supports transportation projects that improve the movement of freight while addressing safety and infrastructure needs. Eligible projects may include highways, bridges, ports, freight corridors, and other transportation facilities that play a role in the nation’s supply chain.
According to USDOT, the program is designed to help improve freight efficiency while reducing congestion and strengthening transportation networks.
Two Funding Tracks Available
For Fiscal Year 2026, USDOT divided INFRA funding into two separate categories.
Track 1: National and Regional Freight Projects
The first funding category includes approximately $426.7 million for large-scale surface transportation projects that have national or regional significance.
Projects eligible under this track may include highway improvements, bridge rehabilitation, freight corridor upgrades, and other infrastructure projects intended to improve transportation efficiency.
Applications for Track 1 funding are due by July 1, 2026.
Track 2: Commercial Truck Parking
The second funding category includes $200 million dedicated to commercial motor vehicle parking projects.
According to USDOT, this funding can be used to expand parking capacity and improve parking access for truck drivers and bus operators.
Applications for Track 2 funding are due by July 15, 2026.
Other Infrastructure Projects Eligible for Funding
In addition to truck parking, USDOT said funding may support several other types of transportation projects.
Examples include:
- Highway and bridge improvements that reduce congestion.
- Railroad crossing safety technology upgrades.
- Improvements to marine highway infrastructure.
- Freight corridor modernization projects.
- Roadway connections to commercial spaceports and air cargo facilities.
The department said these projects are intended to strengthen freight movement and support transportation infrastructure nationwide.
Next Steps for Truck Parking Projects
States, local governments, transportation agencies, and other eligible entities may apply for funding through the INFRA program.
USDOT will review applications based on the criteria outlined in the Notice of Funding Opportunity and will announce selected projects after the evaluation process is completed.
While the funding has been made available, the department has not yet announced which truck parking or infrastructure projects will ultimately receive awards.
