CVSA Operation Safe Driver Week is scheduled for July 12-18, focusing enforcement on reckless, careless, and dangerous driving behaviors across North America.

CVSA Sets Reckless Driving Focus for Operation Safe Driver Week

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has announced that reckless, careless, and dangerous driving will be the focus of Operation Safe Driver Week, scheduled for July 12-18, 2026.

During that week, law enforcement officers across the United States, Canada, and Mexico will increase traffic enforcement efforts aimed at unsafe driving behaviors. Both commercial truck drivers and passenger vehicle drivers may receive warnings or citations if officers observe dangerous driving.

The annual safety campaign combines roadside enforcement with driver education in an effort to reduce crashes caused by risky driving habits.

What Reckless Driving Means During Operation Safe Driver Week

According to CVSA, reckless driving includes operating a vehicle with willful disregard for the safety of others or property.

Careless or dangerous driving can include operating a vehicle without proper attention, caution, or reasonable consideration for other road users.

Examples of unsafe driving behaviors officers may watch for during Operation Safe Driver Week include:

  • Speeding
  • Distracted driving
  • Following too closely
  • Unsafe lane changes
  • Fatigued or drowsy driving
  • Failure to wear a seatbelt
  • Impaired driving
  • Running traffic signals or signs
  • Aggressive driving behaviors

For commercial drivers, these behaviors can carry serious consequences, including citations, CSA score impacts, and possible effects on fleet safety records.

Traffic Fatalities Continue to Drive Enforcement

CVSA said the goal of Operation Safe Driver Week is to improve behavior through education and enforcement because driver actions remain one of the leading causes of preventable crashes.

Recent roadway fatality figures continue to show the scale of the problem:

  • The United States recorded 36,640 traffic deaths in 2025, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
  • Canada reported an average of 2,000 motor vehicle fatalities in 2023, based on data from Transport Canada.
  • Mexico reported 15,979 roadway deaths in 2022, according to international road safety data referenced by CVSA.

CVSA says unsafe driving habits are largely preventable, making driver awareness one of the most important tools for improving highway safety.

CVSA Offers Safety Resources for Truck Drivers

In addition to enforcement, CVSA continues to expand educational materials for commercial drivers through its Operation Safe Driver Program.

Free resources include:

  • Defensive driving guides for commercial drivers
  • Distracted driving awareness materials
  • Aggressive driving prevention tips
  • Public safety videos focused on sharing the road
  • Driver handouts and printed educational materials

These resources are designed to help drivers recognize risky situations early and respond in safer ways.

Why Operation Safe Driver Week Matters for Trucking

For truck drivers, Operation Safe Driver Week is more than an enforcement event. It is also a reminder that professional driving habits remain under close public and regulatory attention.

With July enforcement approaching, fleets and drivers may use the weeks ahead to review safe following distances, eliminate distractions, check schedules that may lead to fatigue, and reinforce defensive driving habits on the road.

This year’s focus on reckless and careless driving puts attention squarely on driver behavior, an area regulators say can make one of the biggest differences in reducing crashes.
