Mack Truck Recall: Possible Safety System Malfunction
Mack Truck recalls 60,450 trucks due to ECU faults that could affect ABS, traction control, and safety systems, increasing crash risks. Model years 2020-2025 impacted.
Mack Trucks Issues Recall Over Safety System Malfunction
Overview of the Recall
Mack Trucks, Inc. is recalling over 60,000 trucks from the 2020 to 2025 model years. This includes the Anthem, Granite, Pinnacle, and TerraPro models. The trucks, equipped with Bendix EC80 Advanced Electronic Control Units (ECUs), may experience issues with their safety systems due to electrical interference. Mack announced this recall on October 23, 2024, after finding that this interference could make the ECU malfunction. When this happens, systems like ABS, traction control, and collision mitigation might not work as intended, raising the risk of accidents.
Affected Models and Possible Safety Risks
The recall, listed as NHTSA Campaign Number 24V-792, affects 60,450 trucks. The EC80 ECU is central to many of the truck’s safety features, and any issues with it could compromise those features. Specifically, these trucks may face interference in the Power Line Carrier (PLC) system, which controls the ABS warning light in the cab. In affected vehicles, especially those towing trailers or with aftermarket electronic devices, this interference can be more severe. Under these conditions, the ECU may incorrectly process signals or stop working altogether, resulting in potential safety risks.
If the ECU malfunctions, it can reduce or disable features like ABS, traction control, and stability control. These systems work together to keep the truck stable and safe, especially in demanding situations. Without them, drivers face an increased risk of crashes. Mack Trucks reported that no accidents or injuries have happened because of this defect, but they have noted 55 cases where the ABS warning light came on.
Understanding the ECU Defect
The defect stems from how the EC80 ECU handles signals. The PLC system, a vital link between the tractor and trailer, can suffer from interference on the electrical line. Vehicles pulling multiple trailers or those with extra devices are more likely to experience this issue. The ECU may not handle the signals properly, leading to ABS faults or a full malfunction. Some trucks may avoid this problem if they have high signal strength and low interference. However, trucks with low signal quality or added electronics are at a greater risk.
This issue was brought to Mack Trucks’ attention on October 11, 2024, by Bendix, the manufacturer of the EC80. After an internal review, Mack’s Product Safety Committee decided on October 17, 2024, that this defect required a recall. Though no field incidents have been reported, Mack Trucks is taking preventive steps.
Steps to Fix the Issue
Mack Trucks will fix the problem by updating the EC80 ECU software free of charge for affected truck owners. This update will remove the PLC functionality that is causing the interference. Mack has also put a hold on affected trucks as of October 18, 2024, ensuring no trucks leave production without this update.
As part of the recall plan, Mack will notify dealers by October 29, 2024, and vehicle owners by December 13, 2024. Truck owners can contact Mack customer service at 1-800-866-1177 to arrange repairs. Additionally, NHTSA is providing support through their hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
Implications for Truck Operators
This recall highlights the importance of fully functioning safety systems in commercial trucks. Reliable systems like ABS and traction control are vital, especially for trucks towing heavy loads or multiple trailers. Mack Trucks is responding quickly to address the issue and ensure these systems work as expected.
Truck owners should be vigilant, watching for ABS warning lights and scheduling repairs once they receive a notice from Mack. The prompt response from Mack Trucks is crucial to maintaining safety and reliability on the road.
