J.B. Hunt Adds 20 Nikola FCEV Trucks to Boost Sustainability

J.B. Hunt Transport Services Inc. has added 20 new Nikola Tre fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) to its fleet. These trucks are part of J.B. Hunt’s plan to help customers with more eco-friendly shipping options, especially on the West Coast.

Helping Customers Go Green

J.B. Hunt, one of North America’s largest supply chain companies, is committed to lowering carbon emissions. Greer Woodruff, the company’s executive vice president of safety, sustainability, and maintenance, explained the importance of this move:

“Our expertise, resources, and relationships uniquely position us to help our customers pursue and realize their sustainability goals,” Woodruff said. “Zero-emission vehicles such as these will help along the path to generate viable, sustainable options that help customers advance their efforts to reduce carbon emissions in their supply chain while also helping J.B. Hunt progress on its sustainability journey.”

Many of the new trucks will be used in J.B. Hunt’s Intermodal operations in California. This includes work at ports and in drayage transport, where goods are moved over short distances. These trucks will help the company comply with California’s stricter emission rules, such as those set by the California Air Resource Board (CARB) and the South Coast AQMD’s WAIRE program. Customers who use these trucks will be able to cut down on their carbon footprint and avoid extra fees from the WAIRE program.

Nikola FCEV Trucks Provide Support

J.B. Hunt is no stranger to using eco-friendly trucks. The company already has over 200 alternative-powered vehicles, which includes battery-electric, hydrogen-electric, and renewable natural gas (RNG) trucks. These new Nikola FCEVs will fit right into the fleet. Nikola will also provide the infrastructure needed to fuel these trucks using its HYLA brand, ensuring they have what they need to stay on the road.

This addition follows J.B. Hunt’s earlier purchase of three Nikola FCEVs in 2023. These trucks are currently in use for customer services, helping J.B. Hunt keep up its sustainable shipping practices.

Leading the Way with New Technology

J.B. Hunt has plenty of experience with alternative-powered vehicles. They’ve been testing these new technologies for years and figuring out how to use them in customer operations. Recently, the company teamed up with Clean Energy to test a new engine powered by RNG called the Cummins X15N. Reducing Carbon Emissions

Looking to the Future

J.B. Hunt is committed to leading the logistics industry into a greener future. The addition of these 20 new Nikola FCEVs is a big step in expanding sustainable transport options. With more eco-friendly trucks, J.B. Hunt is helping both its own operations and its customers cut down on carbon emissions.

As environmental regulations become stricter, J.B. Hunt’s efforts to invest in clean technologies will continue to play a major role in shaping a more sustainable supply chain.
