Autonomous Trucks: Volvo and DHL Partner in Texas
Volvo & DHL begin using autonomous trucks on key Texas routes, leveraging advanced technology to improve freight efficiency, safety, & supply chain operations.
Volvo and DHL Launch Autonomous Trucks Operation in Texas
Volvo Autonomous Solutions (VAS) and DHL Supply Chain have started using autonomous trucks in Texas. This is a big step forward in using advanced technology for freight transportation. The goal is to improve both efficiency and safety.
Autonomous Trucks and Freight Routes in Texas
The project uses Volvo VNL Autonomous trucks. These trucks run on the Aurora Driver system. This system includes sensors, imaging radar, long-range lidar, and high-resolution cameras. These tools help the trucks drive themselves on highways.
For now, the trucks will operate on two routes in Texas. One route runs between Dallas and Houston. The other route connects Fort Worth to El Paso. During this stage, safety drivers will ride in the trucks. They will watch how the systems work and make sure everything runs smoothly with existing logistics networks.
A Partnership for Innovation
Volvo and DHL are working together to improve freight transportation. Their focus is on long-haul trucking and making it more efficient.
Jim Monkmeyer, President of Transportation for DHL Supply Chain North America, said this project helps meet trucking demands. It also supports DHL’s digital transformation plans. He explained, “Autonomy is a key enabler in advancing the digital transformation across the logistics sector by providing reliable long-haul capacity.”
Sasko Cuklev, Head of On-Road Solutions at VAS, highlighted the role of early adopters. “Early adopters play a pivotal role in accelerating the deployment and acceptance of autonomous technology, enabling us to validate both safety and operational performance,” he said.
This partnership shows how autonomous trucks can increase freight capacity. It also highlights how they can make supply chains more efficient.
Safety Comes First
Volvo designed the VNL Autonomous truck with safety in mind. The trucks have redundant systems. This means if one system fails, a backup takes over. This ensures the truck continues to operate safely.
Aurora, a partner in this project, provides advanced technology for the trucks. The Aurora Driver system includes sensors and cameras. These tools help the truck navigate highways safely. The system is built to handle real-world conditions while maintaining safety.
Volvo’s safety-first approach allows these trucks to be tested in real-life situations.
Building a Support System
Volvo is creating a strong support network for these trucks in Texas. This network includes partnerships with local dealers, such as Bruckner’s Truck & Equipment. These dealers will provide maintenance and service for the trucks.
Nils Jaeger, President of Volvo Autonomous Solutions, said that supporting these trucks takes more than just building vehicles. It requires an entire system. He explained, “For a large-scale deployment of autonomy, in addition to the autonomous truck, there also needs to be a cohesive and seamless support network of surrounding infrastructure, which creates a comprehensive autonomous ecosystem that enables daily operations.”
This system ensures the trucks can operate reliably every day.
The Future of Autonomous Trucks and Freight
Autonomous trucks are set to change the freight industry. They can reduce costs, speed up deliveries, and run 24/7. This will improve supply chains and make transport networks stronger.
These trucks could also open new opportunities for drivers. Drivers might oversee and manage fleets from a distance. This could help solve the trucking labor shortage. It could also reduce the stress of traditional driving.
Monkmeyer said autonomous trucks could improve drivers’ lives. He noted that they could lead to better job satisfaction while helping address industry challenges.
