Amazon’s Largest Electric Heavy Truck Order Marks Major Sustainability Milestone
Amazon has announced its largest-ever purchase of electric heavy goods vehicles (eHGVs). The company has ordered over 200 eActros 600 trucks from Mercedes-Benz Trucks. Each electric truck will become part of Amazon’s European middle-mile network. This move is a major step in the company’s plan to reduce carbon emissions.
Advancing the Climate Pledge
This purchase is part of Amazon’s Climate Pledge. The company aims to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2040. The new electric trucks will transport more than 350 million packages each year. They will be used on high-mileage routes in the United Kingdom and Germany. These routes connect Amazon’s fulfillment centers, sort centers, and delivery stations.
The eActros 600, made by Mercedes-Benz Trucks, has a battery capacity of over 600 kilowatt-hours. It can travel up to 500 kilometers on a single charge. This truck is designed to handle the demands of freight transportation.
Tackling Infrastructure Challenges
Amazon will install 360-kilowatt charging stations at key locations. These stations will charge a 40-ton truck from 20% to 80% in just over an hour. The company will also work with other partners to set up additional charging stations. This will help enable longer trips and support more widespread use of electric trucks.
Charging infrastructure for heavy trucks presents several challenges. Vehicles often need to travel long distances. Charging stations must be placed in the right locations. Also, the availability of power is a key concern. Amazon’s investment aims to address these issues and make electric trucking more viable.
Broader Sustainability Efforts
This effort is part of Amazon’s larger plan to reduce emissions. The company has committed more than €1 billion to electrify and decarbonize its transportation network in Europe.
Amazon is expanding its fleet of electric vans and bikes. By the end of 2025, more than 10,000 electric vans are expected to be in operation across Europe. The company is also using electric rail networks in the UK to transport packages. In London, Amazon has started on-foot deliveries using carts that can be refilled from vans nearby.
In Germany, the number of Rivian electric delivery vans has grown to over 600. Electric cargo bikes are also being used. More than 1.5 million packages were delivered by electric bikes in Berlin last year.
Industry Impacts and Future Growth
Amazon’s purchase of these electric trucks shows its commitment to sustainable transportation. Andreas Marschner, Vice President of Amazon Worldwide Operations Sustainability, said: “This order of more than 200 electric trucks underlines our commitment to being a leader in electrifying heavy goods transportation in Europe. It is the biggest electric heavy truck order by Amazon to date anywhere in the world, and is an important step as we work to achieve our Climate Pledge commitment to reach net-zero carbon emissions across our operations by 2040.”
Amazon is also increasing its electric fleet in California and other locations. The company is taking steps to lead the transition to cleaner transportation.
With investments in new technology and charging infrastructure, Amazon is setting an example for the logistics industry. The company’s efforts may encourage others to adopt more sustainable delivery methods in the future.
