Enfield Rest Area Closes for $2.9M Project
Enfield rest area is closed now on I-94 in Minnesota for a $2.9M project, with phased reopening through July impacting truck parking and access.
Enfield Rest Area closure impacts truck parking on I-94
The Enfield rest area along eastbound I-94 in Minnesota has closed as part of a $2.9 million improvement project, according to state officials. The closure affects both passenger vehicles and commercial trucks traveling between St. Cloud and the Twin Cities.
The project, led by the Minnesota Department of Transportation (MnDOT), focuses on resurfacing key areas and upgrading infrastructure at the site. For truck drivers, the closure removes a commonly used stop along a busy freight corridor, at least temporarily.
The Enfield Rest Area Project Includes Ramp and Pavement Work
The Enfield rest area is located between Wright County Road 8 in Hasty and Highway 25 in Monticello. Crews have begun the first phase of construction, which includes resurfacing the entrance and exit ramps and improving sidewalk access points.
These upgrades are part of a broader effort to improve safety and accessibility at the rest area. While the work is relatively short-term, it comes during a time when truck parking availability continues to be a concern across many regions.
Phased Reopening Will Limit Truck Access Early On
The construction project is being completed in three stages, with different access restrictions throughout the timeline.
MnDOT expects the rest area to partially reopen during the week of May 11. At that point, passenger vehicles will be allowed back in. However, the truck and trailer parking section will remain closed while crews complete concrete pavement updates in that area.
Access will then shift again during the week of June 30. At that stage, truck and trailer parking is expected to reopen, while the auto parking area will close for resurfacing work.
According to MnDOT, the Enfield rest area is expected to fully reopen to all traffic by late July, assuming construction stays on schedule.
Limited Truck Parking Options During Closure Period
During the closure, truck drivers traveling eastbound on I-94 will need to plan for rest stops. The shutdown removes one of the available parking areas along this stretch of highway.
MnDOT has identified alternative rest areas for drivers:
- Big Spunk Lake rest area near Avon
- Elm Creek rest area near Maple Grove
These locations may see increased traffic as drivers adjust their routes and stopping points. Depending on demand, parking availability at these sites could become more limited, especially during peak travel hours.
Enfield Rest Area Closure Highlights Ongoing Parking Challenges
The temporary closure of the Enfield rest area adds to a broader issue facing the trucking industry: limited access to safe and available parking.
Even short-term closures can create disruptions, particularly along high-volume freight corridors like I-94. Drivers may need to adjust trip planning, manage hours-of-service limits more carefully, and allow extra time to find available parking.
Timeline Points to Full Reopening by Late July
MnDOT has outlined a clear timeline for the project, with phased access expected over the coming months. If work progresses as planned, the Enfield rest area will return to full operation by late July.
Until then, drivers moving through central Minnesota will need to rely on nearby alternatives and remain aware of changing access conditions as each construction phase is completed.
The project is part of ongoing efforts to maintain and upgrade transportation infrastructure in the state, though it temporarily limits a key stop for truck drivers traveling along I-94.
