Clean Energy Fuels Corp. has finished building a new renewable natural gas (RNG) facility at Ash Grove Dairy in Lake Benton, Minnesota. This facility is now putting RNG into the interstate natural gas pipeline, marking a big step in the company’s goal to make transportation cleaner.
Ash Grove Dairy, located on a 55-acre site, is home to over 2,000 milking cows. This dairy farm produces milk, cheese, yogurt, and now clean RNG. The new facility can process up to 60,000 gallons of manure every day. This manure is turned into biogas, capturing harmful methane that would otherwise pollute the air. The biogas is then processed into about 165 MMBtus of RNG each day.
The RNG made at Ash Grove Dairy has a negative carbon score, making it very good at reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency says that farming creates nearly 10% of U.S. GHG emissions, while transportation makes up another 28%. By capturing methane from farm waste and turning it into RNG for fuel, this facility helps lower GHG emissions compared to diesel.
The project was developed by Dynamic Renewables and cost $22 million. It has passed all the necessary gas tests and is now making RNG ready for use. Clean Energy is filing applications to get federal and state environmental credits for this RNG facility.
“Ash Grove is our fifth renewable natural gas facility to come online in the last nine months,” said Clay Corbus, Senior Vice President at Clean Energy. “It’s always rewarding to see our efforts come to fruition when we begin injecting. With the growing demand for RNG and interest really starting to take off as fleets realize how effective and immediate they can fuel cleanly, the RNG produced at Ash Grove will directly help with reducing carbon emissions across the country.”
As Clean Energy builds more RNG facilities, they aim to meet the growing need for clean fuel among commercial transportation fleets. The success of the Ash Grove Dairy facility shows the potential for RNG to help reduce carbon emissions and support sustainable transportation.
Clean Energy Fuels Corp. is the largest provider of RNG in the U.S. They offer the cleanest fuel for transportation. The company’s mission is to make transportation cleaner by developing and delivering RNG, which is made by capturing methane from organic waste. Clean Energy has many fueling stations across the U.S. and Canada and several RNG production facilities at dairy farms. Their efforts help thousands of vehicles, from airport shuttles to city buses to waste and heavy-duty trucks, reduce their greenhouse gas emissions.
