Wisconsin Fleet Plates Add Heavy Trucks and Trailers
Wisconsin Fleet Plates now cover eligible heavy trucks, tractors and trailers, giving qualifying businesses new options to manage vehicle registrations.
Wisconsin Expands Fleet Plates to Heavy Trucks
Wisconsin businesses with heavy trucks, tractors and trailers have a new option for managing vehicle registrations after a state law took effect October 1. The Wisconsin Department of Transportation Division of Motor Vehicles expanded its Fleet license plate program to include qualifying heavy vehicles. Previously, Fleet plates were available to automobiles and light trucks weighing 8,000 pounds or less.
The expansion means qualifying businesses can now bring more of their commercial vehicles into Wisconsin DMV’s centralized online fleet-management system.
Wisconsin Fleet Plates Now Cover Heavy Vehicles
Under the new rules, businesses and organizations with 10 or more vehicles may qualify for Wisconsin Fleet Plates.
Eligible heavy vehicles include:
- Trucks with gross weights between 8,001 and 54,000 pounds
- Truck tractors and road tractors with gross weights up to 54,000 pounds
- Trailers with gross weights up to 80,000 pounds
The change stems from Wisconsin Act 53, which was enacted in December 2025 and authorized fleet registration for heavy trucks and trailers. The expanded eligibility became effective October 1, 2026.
Wisconsin DMV said more than 12,000 automobiles and light trucks carried Fleet plates last year. The new law allows businesses with qualifying heavy vehicles to use the program as well.
What Wisconsin Fleet Plates Change for Trucking Companies
The change is primarily administrative. Wisconsin Fleet Plates allow qualifying trucking companies and other businesses to manage eligible vehicles through DMV’s eMV Fleet system.
Once enrolled, fleet operators can use a centralized online dashboard to handle several registration-related tasks.
These include processing registration renewals, receiving electronic renewal notifications and ordering replacement plates during renewal. Businesses can also receive registration certificates electronically, update where vehicles are kept and self-certify periods when a vehicle is not operating.
The system can also allow qualifying vehicles to be renewed for multiple quarters or months.
Wisconsin DMV said the expansion is intended to reduce paperwork and simplify registration management for businesses operating fleets with different types of vehicles.
Businesses Need at Least 10 Vehicles
Not every heavy truck operating in Wisconsin automatically qualifies for a Fleet plate.
The expanded program applies to non-individual owners, such as businesses and organizations, that have a combination of at least 10 qualifying vehicles.
Fleet operators must also enroll their eligible vehicles in Wisconsin’s eMV Fleet Registration System.
The current DMV program allows qualifying fleets to combine different eligible vehicle types when meeting the 10-vehicle requirement. Those can include standard automobiles, light trucks, heavy trucks, truck tractors and heavy trailers.
That means a business does not necessarily need 10 heavy trucks alone to qualify.
Heavy Truck Fleet Plates Have Different Requirements
Heavy Fleet plates do not work exactly like the Fleet plates used on passenger vehicles and light trucks.
Wisconsin DMV says Heavy Truck Fleet plates have an annual registration period and expire December 31. Heavy truck plates also require weight stickers.
Registration fees continue to be based on the vehicle’s gross weight, and other applicable charges can still apply.
Tractor Fleet plates also expire December 31 and require weight stickers. Heavy Trailer Fleet plates are available for qualifying trailers with gross weights up to 80,000 pounds.
The state’s standard registration rules still apply alongside the new Fleet plate option.
Wisconsin Fleet Plates Expand Online Management
One of the main purposes of the change is allowing companies to manage more of their vehicles in one place.
Wisconsin DMV’s eMV Fleet system already allowed fleet customers to manage owned and leased vehicles online. The October expansion brings qualifying heavy commercial vehicles further into that process.
Fleet operators can use the system to keep track of registrations and receive renewal notifications electronically rather than relying entirely on separate paperwork for individual vehicles.
Wisconsin DMV Bureau of Vehicle Services Director David Albino said the agency wants to provide businesses with a simplified process for registering and renewing cars, light trucks and heavy vehicles.
For trucking businesses operating a mixture of tractors, trucks, trailers and lighter company vehicles, the expansion could make it easier to handle those registrations through one system.
New Wisconsin Fleet Plate Rules Are Now in Effect
The expansion took effect October 1, making the new heavy-vehicle Fleet plates available to qualifying Wisconsin businesses and organizations.
The change follows Wisconsin Act 53, passed in December 2025. The law authorized Fleet plates for heavy trucks weighing up to 54,000 pounds and heavy trailers weighing up to 80,000 pounds.
Wisconsin DMV has now updated its fleet-registration information to include heavy trucks, truck tractors and heavy trailers among the vehicles that may qualify.
For trucking companies, the change is mainly about registration administration rather than operating authority. Vehicle weight limits, CDL rules and other commercial vehicle requirements remain separate from the Fleet plate program.
