Truck Parking on I-80 Gets $7.46M in Funding
Nebraska secures $7.46 million in federal funding for new Truck Parking along I-80, with 120 planned spaces and a net increase of 92 spaces.
Nebraska Secures $7.46 Million for New I-80 Truck Parking
Nebraska is moving forward with plans to expand truck parking along I-80 after receiving a $7.46 million federal grant. The project will provide approximately 120 truck parking spaces in Dawson County, between Elm Creek and Overton.
The Nebraska Department of Transportation (NDOT) announced the funding on November 5, 2026. The project will receive support through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Nationally Significant Multimodal Freight & Highway Projects (INFRA) Track 2 program.
New Truck Parking Planned Along Interstate 80
The project will expand public truck parking along I-80 between Elm Creek and Overton in Dawson County. This section of the interstate serves commercial vehicles traveling across Nebraska and connecting freight routes throughout the Midwest and western United States.
According to NDOT, the project will provide approximately 120 truck parking stalls. However, the department estimates that the net increase in parking capacity will be approximately 92 spaces. The difference reflects the project’s role in replacing existing truck parking capacity along I-80 as part of Nebraska’s rest area modernization plans.
The new parking facilities are expected to provide additional options for commercial drivers who need a safe location to stop during their trips. NDOT has not provided a construction start date or an expected opening date in its November 5 announcement.
Federal Grant Covers Nearly Half of Project Costs
The $7.46 million federal grant will help fund the estimated $15.5 million project. The remaining costs will be covered through additional federal and state funding, according to NDOT. The grant comes from the INFRA Track 2 program, which specifically supports commercial motor vehicle parking projects.
The program aims to address the national shortage of truck parking by expanding public parking facilities along important freight corridors. Truck parking projects supported by this funding are intended to improve access to safe stopping locations and support the movement of freight across the country. The Nebraska project is one of several truck parking investments selected for federal support in 2026.
Why More Truck Parking Matters for Commercial Drivers
Finding available truck parking remains a challenge for commercial drivers, particularly along busy interstate freight corridors. Federal hours-of-service regulations limit how long most property-carrying commercial drivers can operate before taking required rest periods.
For many drivers, finding a suitable parking location is an important part of planning those breaks. Limited parking availability can make trip planning more difficult, particularly when drivers approach the end of their available driving hours.
Additional public truck parking may help reduce the time spent searching for an available space and provide more options for drivers traveling through Nebraska. The planned I-80 expansion is intended to improve access to parking along a major freight route. However, the project remains in the planning and funding stage, and the additional spaces are not yet available.
Nebraska DOT Highlights Importance of I-80 Freight Corridor
NDOT Director Vicki Kramer emphasized the importance of truck parking along Interstate 80 in the department’s announcement.
“I-80 is a critical freight corridor for Nebraska and the nation, and safe truck parking is an important part of keeping freight moving.”
Kramer said the project will add approximately 92 spaces to the corridor’s overall truck parking capacity. NDOT expects the additional capacity to support safer and more reliable transportation along I-80. Interstate 80 is a major east-west route used by commercial vehicles transporting goods between western and central markets.
Part of a Larger Federal Truck Parking Investment
The Nebraska announcement follows a broader federal initiative to expand truck parking nationwide. On October 14, 2026, USDOT announced $200 million in funding for 14 truck parking projects across 12 states. The investments are intended to expand public commercial vehicle parking along important freight corridors and address parking shortages.
The federal announcement included projects in states such as Iowa, Wisconsin, Georgia, and Texas. Nebraska’s Dawson County project is among the projects supported through the INFRA funding program. According to USDOT, the funding initiative aims to improve access to parking and reduce safety concerns associated with limited commercial vehicle parking availability.
Nebraska Receives Additional Transportation Funding
The truck parking project is part of a larger group of seven Nebraska transportation projects selected to receive a combined $59.6 million in federal funding. While the I-80 project focuses on commercial vehicle parking, the other six projects involve railroad infrastructure. These investments include improvements to rail crossings, track conditions, and passenger and freight rail reliability.
The additional projects are separate from the truck parking expansion and will not directly increase commercial vehicle parking capacity. NDOT said the combined investments are intended to strengthen transportation infrastructure and support the movement of people and goods across Nebraska.
When Will the New Truck Parking Spaces Open?
NDOT has confirmed the federal grant and the planned expansion, but the November 5 announcement does not include a construction schedule or opening date. The department also has not provided details in that release about when the additional parking spaces will become available to commercial drivers.
For now, the project represents a planned increase in public truck parking capacity.Once completed, the Dawson County project is expected to provide approximately 120 truck parking stalls along I-80, resulting in a net increase of about 92 spaces.
