CVSA Launches Human Trafficking Awareness Initiative Ahead of International Soccer Tournament

The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has announced a new human trafficking awareness campaign ahead of a major international men’s football (soccer) competition that will take place across North America.

The HTAI is scheduled for June 1-5. It will bring together law enforcement agencies, transportation organizations, motor carriers, professional drivers, and community members to help identify and prevent human trafficking.

The initiative comes as Canada, Mexico, and the United States prepare to host one of the world’s largest sporting events, which is expected to attract millions of visitors.

Human Trafficking Awareness Effort Targets Increased Risks During Major Events

CVSA said large-scale international events can create conditions that increase the risk of human trafficking.

According to the organization, major events often bring large crowds, increased demand for hospitality services, and added pressure on local resources. These factors may create opportunities for traffickers to exploit vulnerable individuals through sex trafficking or labor trafficking.

The alliance noted that traffickers often target crowded environments and locations experiencing a surge in visitors and temporary workers.

As a result, CVSA is encouraging transportation industry professionals and the public to learn how to recognize warning signs and report suspicious activity.

Commercial Drivers Play an Important Role

Professional drivers are often in a unique position to observe unusual situations while traveling across cities, states, and international borders.

Through the human trafficking awareness initiative, CVSA and its partners hope to provide drivers with information that may help them identify potential trafficking situations and understand the proper steps for reporting concerns.

The campaign will include educational materials, outreach efforts, training opportunities, and public awareness activities throughout the three host countries.

CVSA’s member agencies in Canada, Mexico, and the United States will participate by distributing resources, conducting training, and supporting both in-person and digital awareness campaigns.

Free Resources Available Through TAT

CVSA highlighted several resources available to support the initiative.

TAT, formerly known as Truckers Against Trafficking, is offering free awareness materials, including postcards, wallet cards, posters, and window decals. The materials are available while supplies last and can be ordered online.

CVSA also provides human trafficking awareness resources to the public and offers on-demand training through its member portal for industry and enforcement personnel.

Educational materials are available in multiple languages, including English, French, and Spanish.

Understanding Human Trafficking

CVSA defines human trafficking as the recruitment, transportation, transfer, harboring, or receipt of people through force, fraud, or deception for exploitation.

Victims can include men, women, and children of all ages and backgrounds. The crime occurs throughout North America and around the world.

According to CVSA, traffickers may use violence, fraudulent employment opportunities, false promises of education, or misleading job offers to exploit victims for financial gain.

Part of a Larger Prevention Program

The Human Trafficking Awareness Initiative is part of CVSA’s broader Human Trafficking Prevention Program.

The program seeks to reduce human trafficking throughout North America through coordinated enforcement efforts, investigations, education, and industry involvement.

CVSA said the initiative highlights the importance of cooperation among law enforcement agencies, transportation companies, professional drivers, and community organizations in efforts to identify trafficking activity and support victims.

The organization encourages those interested in local awareness activities to contact the agency responsible for commercial motor vehicle safety in their state, province, or territory.
