Missouri Expands I-70 Truck Parking With New Project

I-70 Project to Add Hundreds of Truck Parking Spaces

The Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) has selected a contractor team for a major truck parking expansion project along Interstate 70. The project is part of the state’s larger Improve I-70 Program and is expected to add hundreds of new truck parking spaces across Missouri’s busiest freight corridor.

According to the MoDOT, the KCI Construction Team was chosen as the apparent best-value proposer for the Improve I-70: Truck Parking project. The team includes contractor KCI and designer Bartlett & West. Final contract negotiations are still underway.

New Truck Parking Planned Along I-70

The project will improve truck parking locations in Concordia, Boonville, Mineola, and Wright City. These locations are all positioned along the heavily traveled I-70 corridor, which handles more than 10,000 trucks each day.

MoDOT said the project will add 255 new truck parking stalls. Once complete, the corridor will have a total of 506 public truck parking spaces.

The project will also include:

• Pavement improvements at rest areas
• Lighting upgrades at all locations
• Bathroom remodels in Wright City and Concordia
• 195 car parking spaces
• Five RV parking spaces
• Pollinator habitat planting across 17 acres

Officials said many public and private parking locations along I-70 are already over capacity during peak hours. MoDOT reported that all public truck parking areas on the corridor are full during busy periods, while about 75% of private truck stops also exceed capacity.

MoDOT Says Truck Parking Improves Safety

State transportation officials said expanding truck parking is important for both safety and infrastructure protection.

According to MoDOT, trucks sometimes park on interstate ramps or shoulders when parking is unavailable. That can create safety risks and also increase repair costs for ramps and guardrails.

Missouri Highways and Transportation Commission Chairman Warren Erdman said the project marks another milestone in the state’s Improve I-70 Program.

Erdman said the project will help modernize truck parking facilities while improving safety for drivers using the corridor.

The selected contractor team also commented on the project. Brian Mulhall said the company looks forward to continuing its partnership with MoDOT and delivering improvements along I-70.

Construction Expected to Begin in 2026

Construction is scheduled to begin in fall 2026. The entire project is expected to be completed by late 2028.

Before construction starts, the contractor team will finalize designs, traffic control plans, and construction schedules. MoDOT said additional project details will be shared on the official Improve I-70 project website.

The truck parking improvements are supported by about $33 million in federal INFRA grant funding.

Project Is Part of the larger I-70 Expansion

The truck parking project is connected to Missouri’s broader Improve I-70 Program. Missouri lawmakers approved $2.8 billion in state funding for the greater effort, which includes adding a third lane in each direction along nearly 200 miles of I-70 between Blue Springs and Wentzville.

State officials said the overall program will focus on rebuilding, expanding, and modernizing one of Missouri’s most important freight routes.

MoDOT said the Design-Build process is being used for the truck parking project. Under this method, design and construction activities happen at the same time under one contract. Officials said this approach helps reduce delays and improve efficiency.

The agency also stated that the project goals include reducing construction impacts, improving work zone safety, and expanding workforce opportunities during construction.
