The DEA Considers Marijuana Rescheduling, Lowering Classification

The DEA plans to change how marijuana is classified under federal law. Right now, marijuana is in Schedule I, which means it’s seen as highly addictive with no medical benefits. The new proposal would move it to Schedule III. This is because health officials believe marijuana has medical uses and a lower risk of abuse.

A public hearing will be held on December 2, 2024. Anyone who wants to join the hearing must submit their request by September 30, 2024.

Why This Matters

If marijuana moves to Schedule III, it could become more accessible for medical use. However, it would still be regulated and controlled. Marijuana-related criminal laws would remain, but the change could impact how marijuana is viewed by the public and the medical community.

How to Get Involved

To participate in the hearing, individuals need to file a request by email or mail before September 30, 2024. This will give them a chance to share their opinions and concerns about the proposed change. The DEA will review all requests and decide who can join the hearing.

This could mark a big shift in the way marijuana is handled in the U.S., affecting both legal and medical industries.
