Marijuana Rescheduling Under Review: Hearing Set for December 2nd
The DEA is considering marijuana rescheduling to Schedule III. Learn about the hearing, its potential impact, & how to participate in the hearing by the September 30 deadline.
The DEA Considers Marijuana Rescheduling, Lowering Classification
The DEA plans to change how marijuana is classified under federal law. Right now, marijuana is in Schedule I, which means it’s seen as highly addictive with no medical benefits. The new proposal would move it to Schedule III. This is because health officials believe marijuana has medical uses and a lower risk of abuse.
If marijuana moves to Schedule III, it could become more accessible for medical use. However, it would still be regulated and controlled. Marijuana-related criminal laws would remain, but the change could impact how marijuana is viewed by the public and the medical community.
How to Get Involved
To participate in the hearing, individuals need to file a request by email (nprm@dea.gov). Written letters are also an option (see address below). All requests must be submitted on or before September 30, 2024. This will give them a chance to share opinions and concerns about the proposed change. The DEA will review all requests and decide who can join the hearing.
