The Mack Trucks Pioneer Boasts New Tech, More Comfort
Mack Trucks introduces the Pioneer, a new highway model with upgraded aerodynamics, driver comfort features, and advanced safety and connectivity systems.
Mack Trucks: Pioneer Highway Truck Sets New Tech Standard
Mack Trucks has introduced a new highway truck focused on improving both fuel efficiency and driver comfort. The new Mack Pioneer comes with several updated technologies and a modern design. It is now available across the U.S. and Canada in a range of configurations, including day cabs and various sleeper options.
Development of the Pioneer started in 2017. The company says the goal was to create a highway truck that performs well while offering drivers more comfort on the road.
New Design Improves Fuel Efficiency
The Pioneer features a new aerodynamic design. It includes a sloped windshield, a smooth front grille, and a streamlined chassis. Optional digital mirror systems replace traditional mirrors with cameras. These updates help improve visibility while reducing wind resistance.
According to Mack Trucks, fuel efficiency gains of up to 11% may be achieved compared to the previous model. And the digital mirror system alone can account for about 1% in fuel savings.
One of the key updates is a new headlamp system. Heated air flows into the lamp lens to prevent ice buildup. Mack says this is the first time this type of defrost system is standard on one of their trucks.
The entry steps also include a safety-focused redesign. They now feature wide treads with grip surfaces. Openings allow snow and ice to fall through, which helps drivers maintain secure footing during winter.
Interior Focused on Driver Comfort
Mack Trucks gathered input from drivers during the design process. They conducted a study at Virginia Tech with 40 professional drivers. Feedback from that study helped shape the cab layout and features.
The truck includes new premium seats with wider frames and more space in the shoulder and headrest areas. For the first time, both armrests move with the seat. This allows for better support and helps reduce fatigue.
The seats also include built-in heating, cooling, and a massage function. These features aim to help drivers stay comfortable during long trips. Mack also updated the truck’s suspension system to provide a smoother ride.
Additional updates in the cab include a push-button start and a flat-bottom steering wheel. The gear selector has been moved to the steering column to improve reach and reduce distractions.
Mack Trucks Offers Multiple Pioneer Configurations
The Pioneer is available in the following configurations:
- Day Cab
- 44” Mid-Roof Sleeper
- 64” Mid-Roof Sleeper
- 76” Mid-Roof Sleeper
- 76” High-Roof Sleeper
The largest models include a feature called FlexSuite. This allows the lower bunk to fold up against the rear wall to make more space. Some models also include a fold-down table for eating or working.
Inside the cab, metal handles and fixtures are used at all major touch points. These metal features are designed for durability and give the truck a solid, high-quality feel.
Mack also offers an optional Integrated Parking Cooler. This cooling system works without the engine running. It uses the truck’s batteries to power the HVAC system. It helps drivers stay cool overnight while reducing fuel use and emissions.
Safety Features and Functional Updates
The Pioneer comes with several new safety features. Frontal airbags are now standard. The truck also includes Mack Protect, a new Advanced Driver Assistance System (ADAS). This system uses technology to help avoid collisions and improve driver awareness.
The HVAC system has been updated as well. New vents in the doors direct air to the driver’s shoulder and side window. This helps with both comfort and visibility.
The truck also includes larger grab bars and stronger door handles. These features help drivers safely enter and exit the cab. The dashboard includes a strong frame that drivers can use for balance or to mount devices.
Technology for a More Connected Experience
The Pioneer is designed to be Mack Trucks’ most connected truck yet. It includes more advanced diagnostic tools and allows for over-the-air software updates. A new app, called MyMack, lets drivers control lights and climate settings remotely.
Inside the cab, drivers have more options to mount phones, tablets, and Electronic Logging Devices (ELDs). There is a dedicated ELD mount, a tablet holder, and two wireless charging stations. One charger is near the driver’s seat, and another is in the sleeper area.
These features help reduce cable clutter and keep devices charged throughout the day.
