New Jersey Man Guilty of Tampering with Truck Diesel Emissions

A man from New Jersey has admitted to breaking federal laws by tampering with pollution control systems on diesel trucks. Jonathan Achtemeier, 44, pleaded guilty to a diesel emissions scheme that caused hundreds of trucks to release harmful pollution. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Tacoma, Washington, some trucks polluted up to 1,200 times more than legally allowed.

How the Diesel Emissions Scheme Worked

Achtemeier worked with truck owners and mechanics to disable emissions systems. This process, known as “deleting,” removed the equipment that controls pollution.

He used a method called “tuning” to fool the truck’s computer into thinking the emissions systems were still working. Achtemeier sent laptops to his partners, who connected them to the trucks. From his own computer, he remotely changed the truck’s software. This allowed the trucks to operate without their pollution controls.

Serious Environmental Impact

Trucks with deleted emissions systems create a lot of pollution. They release gases that harm the environment and can cause health problems, like asthma.

Big Profits from Illegal Work

Achtemeier charged up to $4,500 per truck for his services. He worked quickly, often finishing in under two hours. Using business names like Voided Warranty Tuning (VWT) and Optimized Ag, he earned more than $4.3 million in three years.

His clients were all over the country. Many of the trucks he worked on were in Washington State. The vehicles ranged from smaller pickups, like the Dodge R3500, to big rigs, such as Kenworth and Freightliner trucks.

Facing Legal Consequences

Achtemeier pleaded guilty to violating the Clean Air Act. He now faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine. His sentencing is set for February 14, 2025, in front of U.S. District Judge Tiffany M. Cartwright.

“This case shows how emissions tampering has become a serious issue,” said U.S. Attorney Tessa M. Gorman.

The Environmental Protection Agency’s Criminal Investigation Division led the investigation. The case is being handled by federal prosecutors Lauren Watts Staniar, Dane Westermeyer, and Seth Wilkinson, along with Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Karla Perrin.
