CMV Inspections Results: More Than 1100 Out-of-Service Actions
CMV Inspections conducted by Indiana State Police between April 15 and May 15 resulted in 505 out-of-service drivers, 642 out-of-service vehicles, and 259 overweight violations.
Indiana Reports Nearly 4,700 CMV Inspections in One Month
Indiana State Police (ISP) Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division (CVED) officers completed nearly 4,700 CMV Inspections during a one-month period, resulting in hundreds of drivers and vehicles being placed out of service.
The enforcement took place between April 15 and May 15, 2026, as part of ongoing efforts to enforce state and federal CMV regulations.
Thousands of CMV Inspections Conducted
The ISP CVED is responsible for enforcing safety regulations for CMV operating throughout the state.
During the one-month reporting period, CVED officers completed 4,694 CMV Inspections. The inspections are designed to identify safety violations, equipment defects, and compliance issues that could place drivers and the motoring public at risk.
The division also conducts New Entrant Safety Audits, Compliance Reviews, post-crash inspections, school bus inspections, and enforcement of Indiana’s size and weight regulations.
More Than 500 Drivers Placed Out of Service
Inspection activity led to a significant number of out-of-service violations.
According to the agency, officers placed 505 drivers out of service. Also, removed 642 vehicles from operation due to violations discovered during inspections.
Out-of-service orders can be issued for a variety of reasons, including hours-of-service violations, driver qualification issues, or vehicle defects that affect safe operation.
The figures mean that more than 1,100 out-of-service actions were taken during the reporting period.
Weight and Size Violations Continue
In addition to CMV Inspections, CVED officers also enforce Indiana’s commercial vehicle size and weight laws.
During the reporting period, officers identified:
- 259 overweight violations
- 36 oversize violations
Weight enforcement plays a key role in protecting highways and bridges from excessive wear while helping ensure fair competition among motor carriers.
What CVED Does
The ISP CVED oversees a wide range of commercial vehicle safety programs. In addition to roadside CMV Inspections, the division ensures that motor carriers comply with federal safety regulations, maintain proper registrations, and pay required fuel taxes.
CVED personnel also assist with commercial vehicle crash investigations and administer Indiana’s annual school bus inspection program.
CMV Inspections are Part of Indiana’s Public Safety Effort
ISP said the enforcement activity supports Governor Mike Braun’s public safety platform, which focuses on maintaining safe roads for residents, commercial drivers, and travelers moving through the state.
Often referred to as the “Crossroads of America,” Indiana serves as a major freight corridor for trucks traveling throughout the Midwest and across the country. State officials say CMV Inspections remain an important tool for improving roadway safety and ensuring compliance with transportation regulations.
