CMV Enforcement Results in Hundreds of Trucks Out of Service
CMV enforcement in Indiana results in 752 trucks placed out of service and more than 6,400 inspections during early 2026 commercial vehicle safety efforts.
CMV Inspections in Indiana Top 6,400 Early in 2026
Indiana State Police say their CMV enforcement efforts led to thousands of commercial vehicle inspections during the first weeks of 2026. According to statistics released by the Indiana State Police Commercial Vehicle Enforcement Division (CVED), officers completed 6,455 CMV inspections between January 1 and February 14, 2026.
During that time, enforcement officers placed 653 drivers and 752 trucks out of service for safety violations. Officials say the inspections are part of ongoing enforcement efforts to ensure commercial vehicles meet federal and state safety rules.
Truck Inspections Target Equipment and Compliance
The CVED is responsible for enforcing regulations that apply to CMV operating in the state.
Inspectors conduct several types of safety checks, including:
- roadside safety inspections
- new entrant safety audits
- carrier compliance reviews
These inspections look at issues such as vehicle equipment, driver qualifications, and hours-of-service records. CVED officers also enforce size and weight regulations and verify that commercial carriers are properly registered and paying fuel taxes.
Hundreds of Trucks and Drivers Placed Out of Service
The recent CMV enforcement activity resulted in a significant number of violations.
State Police reported:
- 653 out-of-service drivers
- 752 out-of-service trucks
When a truck or driver is placed out of service, the vehicle cannot continue operating until the violation is corrected.
These violations may involve mechanical problems, driver qualification issues, or missing documentation.
CMV Enforcement Targets Size and Weight Violations
ISP also cited trucks for violations related to size and weight limits.
From January 1 through February 14, officers recorded:
- 278 overweight violations
- 49 oversize violations
Officials say enforcing weight limits helps protect highways and bridges from damage caused by overloaded trucks.
CMV Enforcement Supports Human Trafficking Awareness
Indiana State Police CVED officers also participated in a Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) Human Trafficking Awareness Campaign during the week of January 12–16, 2026.
During that week, officers continued operations while also conducting outreach efforts. Inspectors completed 718 CMV inspections during the campaign.
Additional activities included:
- Seven public speaking events
- Six media interviews
- Eleven social media posts
- Distribution of 1,007 wallet cards and brochures to commercial drivers
The materials are designed to help truck drivers recognize signs of human trafficking and report suspicious activity.
CMV Enforcement Continues During Winter Storm Response
Indiana State Police CVED officers also assisted local police districts following a winter storm in late January.
From January 25 through January 28, officers investigated 131 vehicle crashes and responded to 2,342 service calls.
Officials said these efforts went beyond the division’s normal duties while CMV enforcement activities continued across the state.
CMV Enforcement Remains Key to Truck Safety
The CVED conducts inspections, audits, and compliance reviews as part of ongoing CMV enforcement.
These efforts focus on:
- vehicle equipment safety
- driver hours-of-service compliance
- proper commercial carrier registration
- fuel tax enforcement
State officials say CMV enforcement helps improve highway safety and ensures that commercial carriers operating in Indiana follow federal trucking regulations.
