Brake Safety Week to Target Drums and Rotors
Brake safety inspections will take place Aug. 23-29 as CVSA focuses on brake drums, rotors, and commercial vehicle compliance across North America.
CVSA Announces Brake Safety Week for August 2026
The Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) has announced that Brake Safety Week will take place from Aug. 23 through Aug. 29, 2026. The annual enforcement and inspection campaign will focus on commercial vehicle brake systems across the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
During the seven-day initiative, certified inspectors will conduct roadside inspections with special attention to brake-related components. Vehicles found with brake-related out-of-service or other serious safety violations may be removed from service until repairs are made.
Brake Safety Week Focuses on Drums and Rotors
Each year, CVSA highlights a specific brake component during Brake Safety Week. For 2026, inspectors will place special emphasis on brake drums and rotors.
According to CVSA, problems with brake drums and rotors can reduce braking performance and increase safety risks. In some cases, damaged or broken pieces can separate from the vehicle while it is traveling, potentially causing damage to other vehicles or creating hazards for motorists.
Inspectors will check these components as part of their routine inspections and document any violations they find during the enforcement campaign.
Inspectors Will Collect Brake Violation Data
Throughout Brake Safety Week, inspectors across North America will submit information about brake-related violations and inspection results to CVSA.
The organization will compile and analyze the data after the event concludes. CVSA plans to release the inspection results later this year, providing a snapshot of brake-related compliance across the commercial vehicle industry.
The data collected during previous Brake Safety Week campaigns has helped identify common maintenance issues and areas where additional education and enforcement may be needed.
Drivers and Carriers Encouraged to Check Equipment
In addition to enforcement activities, Brake Safety Week includes an educational component aimed at drivers, carriers, mechanics, and fleet operators.
CVSA is encouraging motor carriers and drivers to perform thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections and verify that all brake components are operating correctly before vehicles are placed on the road.
Officials will also use the campaign to raise awareness about the importance of routine brake maintenance and inspections in preventing crashes and improving highway safety.
Brake Safety Remains a Key Industry Priority
Brake systems are among the most critical safety components on commercial motor vehicles. Properly functioning brakes help drivers maintain control, reduce stopping distances, and avoid crashes.
CVSA says Brake Safety Week serves as a reminder that maintaining safe equipment is a shared responsibility among drivers, motor carriers, mechanics, inspectors, and other transportation stakeholders.
The annual initiative is designed to improve brake safety throughout North America through a combination of roadside inspections, education, and compliance efforts. By identifying unsafe vehicles and encouraging preventive maintenance, CVSA hopes to reduce crashes, injuries, and fatalities involving commercial motor vehicles.
