Doug Teal’s Inspiring Return to Truck Driving Through a Specialized CDL Training Program

Doug Teal, a truck driver with a passion for life on the road, is reclaiming his career. After a spinal cord injury changed his life, Teal has found his way back to driving. He is doing so with help from a unique CDL training program at Wallace State Community College in Alabama.

A Journey Back to the Driver’s Seat

Teal’s journey began in Virginia. That is where he earned his first Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). He started his career as a truck driver and loved the job. He recalls driving weekly routes from North Carolina to California. However, everything changed two and a half years ago. Teal sustained a T6 spinal cord injury that left him using a wheelchair.

Despite his injury, Teal was determined to return to trucking. He moved to Thornton, Colorado, and began looking for a CDL training program. His search was challenging, but he didn’t give up. Teal eventually came across Wallace State Community College. The school’s CDL program is one of the few in the nation designed for wheelchair users. Inspired by an article about the program, he made the 24-hour drive to Alabama.

A CDL Training Program Built for Accessibility

Wallace State’s CDL program stands out for its accessibility. It uses specialized trucks equipped with hand controls. These controls are placed around the steering wheel and connect to the gas and brake pedals. The program also provides a lift system. This helps drivers move from their wheelchair to the truck’s driver’s seat.

Teal found this program to be the perfect fit. He is now earning his CDL for the second time with the help of this innovative training. For him, this is more than just a license. It is a way to regain his independence and pursue his dream.

Inspiring Others to Overcome Challenges

Teal hopes his story will encourage others. “I hope my story inspires others to try to do the same and not give up,” he said. His journey shows that challenges can be overcome with determination and support.

Wallace State has already helped other wheelchair users achieve their goals. The program has graduated three other drivers who now work as commercial truck drivers. Their success highlights the program’s impact.

Creating Opportunities in Trucking

Wallace State is working to lead the way in making the trucking industry more inclusive. Their CDL program is offered at the college’s main campus in Hanceville, AL. It is also available in Oneonta and Winston County. The next session for wheelchair users will begin in June.

Doug Teal’s story is one of determination and resilience. His return to trucking is a testament to his strength and the value of accessible programs. With the right tools and support, more drivers like Teal can overcome such challenges.
