VTNA Truck Recall: New VN Models May Have Brake Timing Issue

NHTSA Issues Recall for VTNA New VN Trucks

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has announced a recall affecting a small number of Volvo Trucks North America (VTNA) vehicles due to a potential issue with brake activation timing. The recall, identified as NHTSA Campaign Number 25V102000, impacts certain 2023-2025 Volvo New VN trucks that may experience delayed brake activation, which could increase the risk of accidents.

Issue with Air Brake Systems

According to the Part 573 Safety Recall Report, the affected trucks do not meet the minimum brake actuation timing requirements set by Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 121. The standard requires a specific response time for air brake systems, ensuring that braking occurs within a regulated time frame. However, in the affected Volvo trucks, a delay in brake activation could extend stopping distances, raising safety concerns.

The issue was identified in Volvo trucks equipped with both back-of-cab and end-of-frame trailer pneumatic connections. The affected vehicles were produced between August 8, 2022, and November 1, 2024.

Safety Risks and Potential Consequences

The delayed brake activation could result in longer stopping distances, which may increase the likelihood of a collision. However, no accidents, injuries, or warranty claims have been reported in connection with this issue, according to Volvo’s filings with NHTSA.

Cause of the VTNA Brake Issue

The root cause of the problem has been identified as insufficient control over non-conforming vehicles during factory production. The faulty brake timing results from a non-compliant relay valve, which does not meet FMVSS 121 standards.

Remedy and VTNA Recall Process

To resolve the issue, Volvo Trucks will install a new pneumatic circuit in affected vehicles at no cost to owners. This repair will ensure compliance with FMVSS 121 regulations.

  • Dealers were notified about the recall February 23, 2025.
  • Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed by April 18, 2025.
  • Owners can contact Volvo Trucks’ customer service at 800-528-6586 for further information.
  • The recall is registered under Volvo’s internal recall number RVXX2502.

Compliance with Federal Regulations

As per federal law (49 U.S.C. § 30112(a)), manufacturers, distributors, and dealers cannot sell any vehicle that does not comply with federal safety standards. Additionally, Volvo must submit quarterly recall status reports to NHTSA, with the first report due 30 days after the close of the calendar quarter in which owner notification occurs.

Contact Information for Owners

Owners of the affected vehicles may contact NHTSA’s Vehicle Safety Hotline at 888-327-4236 (TTY: 888-275-9171) or visit nhtsa.gov for more details. Additionally, VTNA has made regulatory contacts available for further inquiries.
