FMCSA Revokes Six ELD Devices: Important Steps for Motor Carriers

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) has removed six electronic logging devices (ELDs) from its list of registered ELD devices. This decision was announced on January 8, 2025. The FMCSA made this decision because these devices did not meet the minimum federal standards.

The following devices are now on the Revoked Devices List:

  • BLUE STAR ELD
  • ROAD STAR SOLUTIONS
  • United Eld
  • Speed ELD
  • Two devices from TrackEnsure ELD

These removals are effective immediately.

What Carriers Must Do Now

Motor carriers using any of these revoked devices need to act quickly. FMCSA has outlined two essential steps for carriers:

  1. Stop Using the Revoked Devices
Carriers must discontinue using the affected devices immediately. Until they get a replacement, drivers must use paper logs or logging software to track their hours of service (HOS).

  2. Replace Devices by March 9, 2025
Carriers have until March 9, 2025, to replace the revoked devices. New devices must come from the FMCSA’s list of approved devices. This list is available on FMCSA’s ELD website.

After March 9, 2025, carriers who fail to replace revoked devices will be non-compliant.

Temporary Enforcement Rules

For now, FMCSA has asked safety officials not to penalize drivers for using these revoked devices. Officials will not issue citations for the following violations:

  • 395.8(a)(1): No record of duty status
  • 395.22(a): Failing to use a registered ELD

Instead, officials will ask drivers to provide paper logs or logging software. They may also review the HOS data displayed on the revoked devices. These temporary rules are in place to help carriers transition smoothly.

Consequences After March 9, 2025

From March 9, 2025, enforcement will become stricter. Drivers using revoked devices will be cited for non-compliance. They may also be placed out of service (OOS) under the Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance (CVSA) OOS Criteria. Non-compliance could lead to significant delays and fines.

Can Devices Be Reinstated?

There is still hope for the revoked devices. If their providers fix the identified problems, FMCSA may return them to the registered list. If this happens, FMCSA will notify the industry.

Steps to Stay Compliant

FMCSA encourages carriers to act as soon as possible. To avoid penalties and disruptions, carriers should follow these steps:

  • Check the Approved Devices List
Only purchase replacement ELDs from FMCSA’s approved list.

  • Replace Devices Early
Avoid waiting until the March deadline. Early action helps ensure smooth operations.

  • Stay Updated
Monitor FMCSA’s updates for any changes to the Revoked Devices List.

Additional Resources

Carriers seeking more information can visit the FMCSA’s ELD website. The CVSA’s OOS Criteria also provides guidance on enforcement procedures.

FMCSA’s decision highlights the importance of reliable and compliant ELDs. By addressing these changes quickly, carriers can avoid compliance issues and maintain safety on the road.
