California Is Now Using AI to Boost Traffic Safety
California is using artificial intelligence to enhance traffic safety by analyzing crash data, predicting hazards, & identifying high-risk areas on state roads.
California Uses AI to Improve Traffic Safety and Flow
California announced expansion of its use of artificial intelligence (AI) to manage highways and improve traffic safety. This effort comes from a 2023 executive order by Governor Gavin Newsom. The order directs state agencies to use generative AI, also called GenAI, to improve public services.
One of the major goals is to help the California Department of Transportation, known as Caltrans, use AI to study traffic data. Caltrans plans to predict bottlenecks, find dangerous locations, and improve emergency response. These AI tools are also meant to help traffic flow more smoothly and reduce delays on the road.
The state has signed new contracts with companies like Microsoft, Accenture, and Deloitte. These companies are helping California use GenAI to solve transportation problems. The new technology will help Caltrans make decisions based on real-time and past traffic data.
AI Will Help Identify Traffic Safety Risks on the Road
One project focuses on spotting areas where crashes happen often. Caltrans is working with Deloitte to study patterns in traffic accidents. They are using Gemini GenAI technology, developed by Google, to find roads with high collision risks.
The AI system looks at crash records, road conditions, and community data. It then ranks locations based on safety concerns. Caltrans can use this information to make safety upgrades, especially for people walking or biking.
In the next phase of the project, the AI tool will use even more data. It will help the agency decide where and how to make road improvements. Caltrans will review the results before taking any action.
“These historic contracts exemplify Caltrans’ commitment to innovation and being a national leader in adopting new technologies to improve lives and communities. Using GenAI through smart, responsible implementation will be a game changer in developing solutions to ease traffic gridlock and reduce deaths and serious injuries on our roadways,” said Caltrans Director Tony Tavares.
How This Could Improve Traffic Safety for Trucking
These AI projects are not only for passenger vehicles. They could benefit commercial truck drivers as well. Smoother traffic and faster responses to crashes are important for truckers. Delays cost time and money in the trucking business.
Truck drivers may also benefit from safety improvements at high-risk highway exits and intersections. By identifying danger zones more accurately, the state could lower the risk of crashes involving large trucks.
Faster incident detection could also help drivers avoid being stuck behind accidents. That could improve delivery times and keep drivers on schedule.
New Technology is Being Tested Through a Special Program
California is using a unique process to test new technology. It’s called the Request for Innovative Ideas, or RFI2. This method lets the state test projects in a safe and secure environment before using them more widely.
RFI2 started in 2019. It helps the state adopt new technology faster and avoid long delays in government purchasing. With RFI2, agencies like Caltrans can try new AI tools while keeping sensitive data safe.
Traffic Safety Projects Are Moving Forward Through 2025
The new AI road safety projects are part of a larger group of efforts tied to Governor Newsom’s order. These include other areas like housing and job planning. But traffic and road safety remain a key focus.
The first results from the Caltrans AI projects are expected by summer 2025. If the results are successful, the state could use GenAI more widely in transportation planning.
“These historic contracts exemplify Caltrans’ commitment to innovation and being a national leader in adopting new technologies to improve lives and communities,” said Caltrans Director Tony Tavares.
AI Efforts Include Worker Protections
Labor groups are involved in the rollout of AI tools. SEIU Local 1000, a major union in California, supports AI projects that protect jobs. They want to make sure the technology helps workers rather than replacing them.
“SEIU Local 1000 believes technology should lift workers up, not push them out. As the state explores generative AI, we are committed to ensuring this innovation strengthens public services and protects good union jobs,” said SEIU Local 1000 Chief Negotiator Susan Rodriguez.
Looking Ahead
California’s use of AI in traffic safety is still in the early stages. But the goal is clear. The state wants to use GenAI to prevent crashes, reduce delays, and keep roads safer.
These projects may offer long-term benefits for commercial drivers, especially in areas with high traffic like I-5 and I-405. As the technology continues to develop, truckers could see changes in how roads are managed and maintained.
With new tools and partnerships in place, California may help lead the way in using AI for road safety across the country.
