Trucking Industry Calls for US Infrastructure Improvement

The American Trucking Associations (ATA) is asking Congress to spend more on US Infrastructure. Dennis Dellinger, the President and CEO of Cargo Transporters, Inc., spoke at a January 2025 hearing. He explained how better roads and infrastructure are important for trucking and the economy.

Big Problems for US Infrastructure

Dellinger talked about why better funding is needed. He mentioned the supply chain crisis in 2021 and Hurricane Helene’s damage to North Carolina. Both showed how weak infrastructure can cause big problems.

He said the last highway bill helped, but inflation made it less effective. There is still a lot to fix. Bottlenecks on highways cost the trucking industry over $100 billion each year. That is like 435,000 truck drivers sitting idle for a year. Dellinger said improving highways will help lower costs, grow manufacturing, and keep the U.S. economy strong.

Keeping Drivers and Roads Safe

The trucking industry spends $14 billion a year on safety systems and training. But there are still risks. One big problem is truck parking. Many drivers can’t find safe places to park and must park in dangerous or unauthorized spots. Dellinger said this puts both drivers and the public at risk.

He also stressed the need to keep drug testing rules in place. These rules help keep unsafe drivers off the road.

Helping the Environment

Trucking has made progress in becoming more environmentally friendly. Modern trucks are much cleaner than older ones. But Dellinger said some Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rules have caused problems. He said these rules raise costs and disrupt the industry without big environmental benefits. He called for better regulations that are both ambitious and realistic.

Creating Jobs and Supporting Business

The trucking industry provides good jobs and helps people start businesses. Dellinger asked Congress to support programs that develop the workforce. He also said Congress should protect the independent contractor model. This model allows drivers to run their own businesses.

A Call to Work Together

Dellinger asked Congress to create a strong plan for roads and infrastructure. He said, “Roads and bridges aren’t affiliated to a given party, they are an American priority.”

He hopes the next highway bill will fund projects that improve safety, reduce delays, and support the economy. Better infrastructure, he said, is key to keeping the nation moving forward.
