Governor Murphy Urges Trump Administration to Reexamine NYC Congestion Pricing Plan

On January 20, 2025, New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy sent a letter to President Trump. He asked the new administration to take another look at the NYC congestion pricing plan. The letter was sent on President Trump’s first day of his second term. Governor Murphy said the plan is hurting New Jersey commuters and communities.

Governor Murphy’s Call for Collaboration

The Governor said he wants to work with the Trump Administration. He sees NYC congestion pricing as a shared concern. In the letter, Murphy wrote, “As you begin your second term as President, I welcome any opportunity to work with you and your Administration where we can find common ground. One area where I believe our priorities align is congestion pricing.”

Murphy said the policy puts a big financial burden on New Jersey residents. Many people depend on traveling to lower Manhattan. He called the plan “a disaster” for working- and middle-class residents. These people now have to pay extra fees on top of bridge and tunnel tolls.

Unintended Consequences for New Jersey Communities

The letter talked about other problems caused by NYC congestion pricing. Murphy is worried about more traffic and pollution in New Jersey towns near the New York border. He said these communities are not getting fair compensation. Murphy stated, “New Jersey communities are not being fully compensated for the additional traffic and attendant pollution that will be re-routed to them because of congestion pricing.”

This issue raises concerns about fairness and the environment. Many affected areas include lower-income communities.

Legal Challenges and Federal Oversight

Governor Murphy’s letter mentioned changes to New Jersey’s lawsuit. The lawsuit is against the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) and the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA). The state wants to challenge how the federal government handled changes to the program last year.

Murphy asked the Trump Administration to review the program carefully. He said, “I am requesting that New York’s congestion pricing scheme receive the close look it deserved but did not receive from the federal government last year.” New Jersey plans to keep fighting the program in court and through policy.

NYC Congestion Pricing: A Growing Controversy

New York’s congestion pricing plan has faced criticism from the start. Critics say it unfairly affects commuters from outside the state. Supporters believe the plan will help cut down traffic in Manhattan. They also think it will provide funds to improve public transportation.

The debate shows the challenge of balancing regional and local interests.

Governor Murphy’s letter could lead to a clash between New York and New Jersey. The Trump Administration may play an important role in what happens next. The full text of the letter can be accessed here.

The outcome of this issue will affect commuters, local businesses, and relations between the two states.
