Wabash Trailers Recall: 920 New Dry Vans Affected

Wabash National Corporation is recalling certain 2027 Wabash trailers because part of the rear impact guard may not have been installed to federal safety standards.

The recall affects 920 van trailers, according to documents filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). The issue involves bumper tube bolts on the rear impact guard. Those bolts may not have been tightened to the correct torque level.

As a result, the rear impact guard may not provide the level of protection required under Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard 223. That standard covers rear impact guards on trailers.

The recall is listed under NHTSA campaign number 26V391000.

Which Wabash Trailers Are Included?

The affected units are 2027 Wabash van trailers built from April 20, 2026, through June 5, 2026.

Wabash said the rear impact guard bolts may have been tightened below the required specification by a supplier. The company said it identified the affected trailers through manufacturing records and information from that supplier.

The rear impact guard is a key safety part on the back of a trailer. It is designed to help protect a following vehicle during a rear-end crash.

NHTSA said an improperly installed guard may not provide enough protection for a following vehicle. That could increase the risk of injury in a rear-end crash.

No Warning Sign for Drivers

The recall report states that there is no warning sign connected to the problem.

That means a commercial truck driver may not notice the issue during normal operation. There may be no sound, movement, dashboard warning, or other clear sign from the cab.

For that reason, the recall is mainly a fleet, maintenance, and ownership issue. Carriers and trailer owners will need to check whether any affected trailers are in their operations.

Drivers who pull newer Wabash trailers may be asked to bring certain units to a terminal, dealer, or maintenance location for repair.

How This Could Affect Truck Drivers

Most company drivers will not be directly responsible for fixing the issue. However, the recall can still affect daily operations.

A driver assigned to an affected trailer may have that trailer pulled from service for inspection or repair. Dispatch plans could change if a trailer has to be routed to a dealer or maintenance shop.

Drivers may also be asked to confirm trailer numbers, report equipment locations, or help a fleet identify where affected units are being used.

Owner-operators who own a 2027 Wabash van trailer may have a more direct role. They may need to check whether their trailer is included in the recall and schedule the repair.

The recall may also matter during roadside inspections, crash reviews, safety audits, or insurance claims if an affected trailer has not been repaired.

Free Repair Planned

Wabash said dealers will tighten the bumper tube bolts free of charge.

The remedy is not described as a major parts replacement. Instead, the fix involves torquing the bumper tube nuts and bolts to the proper specification.

Wabash said trailers repaired under the recall will have the rear impact guard bolts tightened correctly.

The company also said the condition was corrected in production on June 6, 2026. That means trailers built after that date should not be part of this recall based on the information filed with NHTSA.

Owner Notices Expected in August

Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed on August 14, 2026.

Wabash said the recall notice to owners will be part of a phased recall. The company also reported that it is not aware of any crashes or injuries tied to the condition.

Owners may contact Wabash customer service at 1-765-771-5404. They may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.

Why Fleets Should Check Records

The recall has the most direct impact on fleets, leasing companies, maintenance departments, and trailer owners with newer Wabash dry van equipment.

The affected production window is narrow, but the number of trailers is still large enough to matter for carriers that recently added new Wabash trailers to their operations.

Wabash estimated that 50% of the 920 potentially affected trailers may have the defect. That means about half of the recalled group could have rear impact guard bolts that were not tightened to the proper specification.

Fleets should review trailer records, production dates, VIN information, and recall notices to determine whether any equipment is included.

Safety and Compliance Issue for New Wabash Trailers

This recall is not tied to a reported crash or injury. It is also not a broad recall across all Wabash trailers.

Still, it is an important safety and compliance issue for fleets that operate affected equipment.

The issue involves a federal standard for rear impact protection. That makes the recall more than a routine maintenance item.

For truck drivers, the key point is simple: some newer Wabash trailers may need a free rear impact guard repair. Since there is no warning sign for drivers, affected equipment will need to be identified through recall records, fleet tracking, and maintenance follow-up.
