TIFIA Loan Hits $3.89B in Largest Project to Date
New TIFIA loan sets a new record with $3.89B awarded to expand Georgia’s SR 400 express lanes, aiming to reduce congestion and boost regional mobility.
$3.89 Billion Loan By Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (TIFIA)
TIFIA Loan to Support Georgia’s SR 400 Expansion
The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) has announced a new loan worth $3.89 billion. The funding, made possible by the Transportation Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act (TIFIA). The TIFIA loan will support the expansion of State Route 400 (SR 400) in Georgia. This is the largest loan issued so far under the federal program.
The project will add elevated express lanes between Sandy Springs and Forsyth County, north of Atlanta. According to USDOT, the new lanes may help reduce traffic, improve travel times, and support public transit.
Loan Will Help Build Express Lanes
The TIFIA loan will go toward building 16 miles of new toll lanes along SR 400. The Georgia Department of Transportation (GDOT) is leading the work. A private construction partner is also involved.
The goal is to separate faster-moving traffic from local vehicles. This may ease congestion. In addition, GDOT says the project could improve safety by reducing crashes in heavy traffic zones.
TIFIA Loan Program Offers Flexible Financing
The TIFIA loan program helps states pay for large infrastructure projects. It provides long-term, low-interest federal loans. These loans can cover up to 49% of a project’s total cost.
In the past, federal policy often limited this to 33%. However, USDOT recently changed that. Now, more projects may qualify for the full 49%. These changes aim to speed up funding for road and transit projects.
TIFIA Loan Part of Broader USDOT Strategy
This new TIFIA loan is part of a larger plan from USDOT. The agency says it wants to remove delays and help states modernize aging roads and bridges. It has also updated rules to shorten environmental reviews and cut paperwork.
USDOT officials believe that these efforts could help states move faster. They also aim to attract more private partners to help fund transportation improvements.
Project Could Affect Freight and Trucking
The SR 400 corridor is important for both commuters and freight. Many trucks travel this route every day. If the express lanes reduce traffic, shipping may become more reliable. This could help trucking companies save time and fuel.
However, the express lanes will charge tolls. Some truckers may avoid them due to the extra cost. Even so, the project may still bring long-term benefits to freight and commercial traffic.
TIFIA Loan Backs Atlanta-Area Infrastructure
The $3.89 billion TIFIA loan will support a key part of Georgia’s transportation system. SR 400 connects downtown Atlanta to major suburbs like Alpharetta and Cumming. It also links to I-285 and other highways.
Construction is already underway in some areas. More work will follow in phases. The full project is expected to take several years. GDOT will release more updates as construction moves forward.
