Pro-Trucker Package Unveiled by U.S. DOT to Aid Truckers

U.S. Transportation Secretary Sean P. Duffy has announced a new set of actions aimed at supporting America’s truck drivers. These actions include federal funding, proposed rule changes, and updates to existing systems. The pro-trucker package is part of an executive order signed by President Donald Trump. The order aims to reduce federal rules that impact the trucking industry.

The U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) says the new steps may improve daily working conditions for truckers. The agency hopes the pro-trucker plan will help with ongoing problems like parking shortages and complex regulations.

Pro-Trucker Package Includes $275 Million for Parking

A major part of the pro-trucker package is focused on increasing truck parking. USDOT says it will provide more than $275 million in federal grants. These funds are meant to build more parking areas for truck drivers.

Florida is set to receive $180 million of that total. That money will go toward creating 917 new truck parking spaces. The spaces will be located along the I-4 corridor in Volusia, Seminole, and Osceola Counties.

According to the Department, about 40% of drivers spend over an hour each day searching for legal parking. This leads to wasted time and safety concerns. More parking could help reduce these problems.

Plan Drops Speed Limiter Mandate

The pro-trucker plan also includes the decision to withdraw a proposed rule requiring speed limiters on heavy trucks. USDOT says this type of rule can create safety risks. Trucks that must go slower than other vehicles may be more likely to be involved in accidents.

The agency says it is moving away from “one-size-fits-all” mandates. Officials want to allow professional drivers more flexibility behind the wheel.

Pro-Trucker Package Updates FMCSA Digital Tools

The pro-trucker package includes changes to online systems used by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). The agency plans to update its Consumer Complaint Database to make it easier to use. It will also upgrade the DataQ system, which allows drivers to dispute inspection or violation reports.

USDOT says these updates will improve transparency and access. They are part of a larger push to modernize how the agency serves drivers.

Pro-Trucker Actions Cut Red Tape and Target Fraud

FMCSA is also planning to reduce the length of its regulations. The agency proposes cutting 1,800 words from the federal code. Officials believe this step will save time and money for drivers.

At the same time, the agency says it will increase enforcement against illegal double brokering. This is when freight contracts are misused or passed on in a way that leaves drivers unpaid. The pro-trucker effort may help protect truckers from this kind of fraud.

Trucking Industry Supports Pro-Trucker Measures

Leaders in the trucking industry have responded positively to the pro-trucker actions. Many say the measures address issues that truckers have raised for years.

“We thank the Trump Administration and Secretary Duffy for their continued focus on the issues impacting America’s trucking industry. As the leading mover of the nation’s freight, the concerns of our industry not only impact the 8.5 million Americans who work throughout trucking, but they also affect the countless businesses and families we serve across the country. A safe and strong trucking industry is critical to America’s economic growth and security, and data-driven measures like these that reduce regulatory burdens are important steps toward that end. We look forward to continued partnership with the Administration to advance policies that strengthen America’s supply chain and bolster our essential workforce,” said American Trucking Associations President and CEO Chris Spear.

“OOIDA and the 150,000 truckers we proudly represent welcome these transformational actions from President Trump and Secretary Duffy. These steps not only improve the daily lives of truckers across America, but also enhance safety for everyone on the road. For years, truckers have urged Washington to address the severe shortage of truck parking, eliminate the dangers posed by a national speed limiter mandate, and give drivers greater control over their hours-of-service. We thank President Trump and Secretary Duffy for listening to the men and women behind the wheel who keep America’s economy moving,” said Todd Spencer, President and CEO of the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association.

Executive Order Drives Reforms

The pro-trucker package was developed in response to President Trump’s executive order. The order is titled Enforcing Commonsense Rules of the Road for America’s Truck Drivers. It calls for a reduction in federal oversight and gives more freedom to drivers and carriers.

USDOT says this is just one of several efforts to improve safety and support drivers. The agency hopes the pro-trucker steps will lead to long-term improvements in the industry.
