Mack Trucks has recalled 15,841 vehicles due to improperly welded seat belt anchors that may fail to meet federal safety standards, increasing injury risk.

Mack Trucks Recall 15,841 Vehicles for Seat Belt Anchor Defect

Recall Overview

Mack Trucks has announced a safety recall affecting more than 15,800 vehicles because of a potential problem with the passenger-side seat belt anchorage. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) identified this as Campaign Number 25V666000.

This recall involves several models, including the 2019–2025 Mack Anthem, 2019–2025 Mack Granite, 2020–2025 Mack MD, 2024 Mack MD Electric, and 2025 Mack Pinnacle.

The issue centers on improperly welded seat belt anchorage brackets that may not meet federal safety standards under Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) 210, which governs seat belt assembly anchorages. In a crash, a faulty weld could cause the seat belt to detach, increasing the risk of injury.

Affected Mack Trucks and Safety Risk

According to Mack, the problem results from inadequate welding during cab assembly on vehicles equipped with a passenger bench seat. The recall covers models produced between January 30, 2018, and July 25, 2024, depending on the truck series.

The manufacturer estimates that about 26% of the recalled Mack Trucks may have the defect. Mack reported that no warning indicators exist to alert drivers before a failure occurs, meaning the issue could go unnoticed until a crash.

No Accidents or Injuries Reported by Mack Trucks

At this time, Mack Trucks has not reported any accidents, injuries, or field incidents related to the defect. The company first discovered the issue on June 24, 2024, during internal crash testing of a cab structure. The test revealed that a weld nut plate attached to the passenger seat belt anchor failed under stress.

Following this discovery, Mack and its cab supplier conducted an investigation and found that some anchors had been only “tack welded” instead of fully welded around the perimeter. The company quickly updated welding instructions and added five quality control gates to prevent the problem from recurring in production.

Mack Trucks Recall Timeline

The seat belt welding concern was first noted in mid-2024 when engineers identified inconsistencies in the welding process. After testing and implementing improvements, Mack Trucks continued to monitor vehicles in service.

In September 2025, a dealer warranty claim provided photos showing that improper welds still existed in some units. This evidence prompted the company’s Product Safety Committee to launch a formal recall. The decision was made on September 29, 2025, to ensure that all affected trucks would be inspected and repaired.

Remedy and Owner Notification Plan

To resolve the issue, Mack Trucks will install a reinforcement plate over the seat belt anchor to restore full strength. The repair will be completed free of charge at authorized dealerships.

Dealer notifications will begin on October 13, 2025, while owners will be notified by mail starting December 5, 2025. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) affected by this recall are searchable on the NHTSA website.

Owners can contact Mack Trucks customer service at 1-800-866-1177 and reference recall number SC0485. They may also reach the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.nhtsa.gov for additional information.

Production Improvements at Mack Trucks

Mack confirmed that new quality measures have been implemented in the manufacturing process to prevent future issues. The company relocated the seat belt anchor welding process to a new section of the cab assembly plant and introduced five quality inspection checkpoints to ensure the welds meet all federal requirements before each truck leaves the factory.

Models Included in the Recall

The recall covers several Mack Trucks models across different production years. Mack MD, built between 2020 and 2025, makes up the largest group, with about 13,009 diesel-powered units affected. The Mack Granite, produced from 2019 through 2025, includes around 2,758 trucks.

Mack Anthem, also manufactured between 2019 and 2025, accounts for 51 units in the recall. The Mack MD Electric, produced in 2024, includes 22 affected vehicles, and the Mack Pinnacle, from the 2025 model year, includes just one diesel unit.

In total, 15,841 trucks are covered under this recall. Each affected truck is equipped with a passenger bench seat that may contain an improperly welded seat belt anchor, prompting the official safety action.
