I-64 Welcome Center Opens with More Truck Parking in Indiana

The new I-64 welcome center in southwest Indiana is now open, bringing expanded truck parking, modern amenities, and updated facilities for drivers. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) marked the opening on March 26, highlighting ongoing efforts to improve rest areas and address truck parking shortages across the state.

I-64 Welcome Center Opens in Posey County

State officials held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new I-64 welcome center located on eastbound I-64 near mile marker 7 in Posey County. The facility replaces an older rest area and introduces updated features designed for both passenger vehicles and commercial drivers.

The design of the welcome center is inspired by the boyhood home of President Abraham Lincoln. Interactive exhibits provide historical information about Lincoln, along with displays recognizing former Indiana presidents Benjamin Harrison and William Henry Harrison.

Officials said the goal is to give travelers a place to rest while also offering a connection to Indiana’s history.

I-64 Welcome Center Adds 75 Truck Parking Spaces

A major highlight of the welcome center is the increase in truck parking capacity. The new facility offers 75 semi-truck parking spaces, which is 60 more spaces than the previous location.

This expansion is part of INDOT’s long-term plan to improve truck parking across Indiana. The agency plans to add more than 1,200 truck parking spaces statewide, nearly doubling current capacity.

The added parking helps drivers comply with hours-of-service regulations and reduces the need for unsafe roadside parking.

Amenities at the I-64 Welcome Center

The I-64 welcome center includes several new amenities designed to improve the travel experience for drivers and families.

Features include:

  • Adult recreation areas
  • A children’s playground
  • A dog park
  • Interactive exhibits

These additions give drivers a safe place to take breaks during long hauls while improving overall comfort on the road.

INDOT Expands Rest Areas Across Indiana

The I-64 welcome center is part of a larger statewide improvement plan led by INDOT. The agency has secured more than $600 million in federal funding to upgrade 21 rest areas and welcome centers.

The plan focuses on modernizing facilities, increasing parking capacity, and improving infrastructure. All projects are expected to be completed by the end of Fiscal Year 2034.

Officials said these upgrades are designed to improve safety and efficiency across Indiana’s transportation system.

Safety Remains a Priority for INDOT

State leaders emphasized that rest areas like the I-64 welcome center play an important role in roadway safety. Providing drivers with a place to rest helps reduce fatigue-related crashes.

The project also supports ongoing safety efforts such as Indiana’s “Buckle Up Phone Down” campaign, which promotes seatbelt use and discourages distracted driving.

INDOT continues to manage more than 29,000 highway lane miles and thousands of bridges, supporting both passenger and commercial traffic statewide.

I-64 Welcome Center Now Open

Construction of the I-64 welcome center began in 2023 and was completed by Garmong Construction Services. The facility is now open to the public following the ribbon-cutting event.

With expanded truck parking and modern amenities, the new I-64 welcome center reflects ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and support drivers across Indiana.
