FMCSA Motus will launch in 2026 as a new USDOT registration system, requiring carriers to update Portal accounts, verify officials, & confirm business details.

FMCSA Motus System: What Trucking Needs to Know

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) is preparing to launch a new registration system in 2026. This system is expected to change how motor carriers and other transportation businesses handle federal registration. The new platform is called Motus. It is designed to bring all registration tasks into one secure online system. According to FMCSA materials, Motus will act as a single dashboard where companies can manage their registration, update records, and control access to their information.

What Is the FMCSA Motus System?

Motus is a modern, mobile-friendly platform. It allows businesses to register with FMCSA and manage their accounts in one place. Companies will also be able to control who has access to their registration data.

The system is meant to simplify the current process. It brings many steps together into one platform. This reduces the need to move between different systems.

Motus will be available to any business that needs a USDOT number or operating authority. This includes motor carriers, brokers, freight forwarders, and other related businesses.

FMCSA says the system will help reduce mistakes. It will use real-time data checks and auto-fill features. These tools are meant to catch errors and make the process faster.

FMCSA Preparing for 2026 Motus Launch

FMCSA plans to launch Motus in 2026. The agency is asking companies to prepare now.

Motor carriers and other registered businesses are being told to check their FMCSA Portal accounts. They should make sure their account is active. They also need to confirm that the correct company official is listed. In addition, they should update their business information.

FMCSA says these steps will help companies move into the new system more easily. They will also help businesses claim their USDOT number and set up their Motus account once the system is live.

Who Needs to Take Action

Any company with a USDOT number or operating authority is expected to take action.

This includes businesses with MC, MX, or FF docket numbers. It also includes other entities that are registered with FMCSA.

These steps apply across the industry. Motor carriers, brokers, and other transportation businesses are all included.

Key Steps to Prepare in the FMCSA Portal

FMCSA has outlined several steps that companies should complete before Motus launches.

1. Confirm Portal Account Access
Companies should log in to the FMCSA Portal. This will confirm that the account is active. If a company does not have an account, one should be created.

This step is important. It allows businesses to access Motus later and link their current registration records.

2. Verify Company Official Information
Companies need to review who has access to their Portal account. They should confirm that the correct Company Official is listed.

The Company Official should be the owner or an employee who manages FMCSA registration. FMCSA notes that this role should not be given to outside consultants or service providers.

The email used for Login.gov must match in both systems. It must be the same in the FMCSA Portal and in Motus. This is required to link the company’s USDOT number when the new system launches.

3. Update Business Information
FMCSA recommends that companies submit a Biennial Update, also known as the MCS-150. This can be done in the Portal under the “Registration” tab.

Keeping this information up to date will help prevent problems during the transition. It will also make the setup process smoother when Motus goes live.

What Companies Will Be Able to Do in Motus

Motus is designed to handle many registration tasks in one place.

Companies will be able to apply for a USDOT number or operating authority. They can also update their business information and submit required filings.

The system will allow users to track the status of their applications. It will also allow companies to upload documents during the process.

Other features include the ability to reinstate suspended authority. Companies will also be able to activate or deactivate a USDOT number through the platform.

All of these tasks will be handled in one system instead of multiple tools.

Role of Service Providers Under the New System

FMCSA says service providers will also need to adjust to the new system.

This includes consultants and third-party companies that help with filings.

These providers must create a supporting company account in Motus. This step is part of an early access period.

Once Motus is fully launched, carriers must first claim their USDOT number. They must also create their own company account. Only after that can they give access to service providers.

This change gives carriers more control over their registration data.

How Motus May Affect Truck Drivers and Carriers

Motus is expected to change how registration tasks are handled across the trucking industry.

For truck drivers and carriers, the main impact will be a simpler process. The system is designed to reduce duplicate entries and bring all tasks into one place.

This could make it easier to keep company information up to date. It may also reduce delays caused by errors in filings.

The system will also include stronger security features. These are meant to prevent unauthorized access and link filings to verified businesses.

For carriers, this may lead to better control over their accounts and fewer risks tied to fraud.

Support and Resources Available for Motus

FMCSA has provided support tools to help companies prepare.

Users can access training materials through the FMCSA Portal. These materials explain how to manage accounts and update information.

Companies can also contact FMCSA for help. The agency offers phone support for registration questions and Portal issues. The registration team can be reached at 800.832.5660 Monday through Friday from 8am – 8pm ET.

These resources are meant to help businesses complete the required steps before the launch.

Transition Expected to Continue Through 2026

FMCSA plans to roll out Motus to all users in 2026.

This change marks a major update to how registration is handled in the trucking industry.

Companies that prepare early are expected to have fewer issues during the transition.
