Florida will require all driver license knowledge and skills exams to be administered in English only starting February 6, 2026, under a new FLHSMV policy.

Florida Requires English-Only Driver License Exams Starting February 6

Florida is changing how every driver license exam is administered statewide. Beginning February 6, 2026, all knowledge and skills tests will be offered only in English, according to an announcement from the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles (FLHSMV).

The new rule applies to every license classification in the state, including commercial and non-commercial licenses.

English-Only Exams Apply to All License Types

Under the updated policy, every driver license exam must be taken in English. This includes:

  • Knowledge exams
  • Skills and road tests
  • Exams administered orally

FLHSMV stated that interpreters and translation services will no longer be allowed during any portion of driver license testing.

Testing Changes Affect CDL and CLP Exams

The new testing rule directly affects truck drivers seeking a Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) or Commercial Driver License (CDL).

Previously, CLP and CDL knowledge exams were available in English and Spanish. Knowledge exams for most non-commercial license classifications were offered in multiple languages.

Under the revised policy, all knowledge and skills exams, including CDL and CLP testing, will be administered exclusively in English.

License Testing System Updated Across Florida

FLHSMV confirmed that its testing system has been updated statewide to support the English-only requirement.

As part of the transition:

  • Printed exams in languages other than English are being removed
  • Language translation services are no longer permitted
  • All driver license testing formats now follow a single English standard

The system updates were completed ahead of the policy’s effective date.

Driver License Policy Focuses on Roadway Safety

FLHSMV said the testing change supports roadway safety by promoting clear communication and understanding of traffic laws.

State officials emphasized that consistent comprehension of road signs, rules, and instructions is essential for safe driving. The agency also cited responsible driving behavior as a key goal of the updated policy.

Trucking Industry Impact From Driver License Exam Changes

The English-only requirement is expected to impact current and future truck drivers testing in Florida.

Drivers preparing for a CDL or CLP will need to demonstrate English proficiency during all examinations. Driving schools, carriers, and training programs may also need to adjust instruction methods to align with the updated testing standards.

Changes Take Effect February 6

The English-only driver license testing requirement takes effect statewide on Friday, February 6, 2026.

All exams administered on or after that date must comply with the new policy. FLHSMV said the rule applies at all testing locations throughout Florida.
