Diesel Prices increase nationwide, reaching .375 per gallon, as all U.S. regions report higher fuel costs in the latest EIA data.

Diesel Prices Rise Nationwide in Latest Report

Diesel prices increased across the U.S. last week, adding pressure to fuel costs in the trucking industry. The latest data from the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) shows prices moving higher in every region. The national average rose by more than 30 cents per gallon, reflecting continued volatility in fuel markets.

Diesel Prices Increase Across the U.S.

The national average for diesel prices reached $5.375 per gallon for the week ending March 23, 2026. This is an increase of 30.4 cents compared to the previous week, when prices stood at $5.071 per gallon.

Diesel remains much higher than in past years. The current average is $1.808 higher than one year ago and $1.341 above levels from two years ago.

These higher fuel costs may continue to affect trucking operations, especially for carriers working in the spot market where margins are already tight.

Regional Diesel Prices Continue to Climb

The diesel price moved higher in all major U.S. regions. Some areas reported sharper increases, especially along the coasts.

East Coast Diesel Prices

The price on the East Coast reached $5.480 per gallon, rising 37.5 cents from the prior week.

  • New England: $5.759 (up 52.3 cents)
  • Central Atlantic: $5.629 (up 43.3 cents)
  • Lower Atlantic: $5.395 (up 33.8 cents)

New England reported the largest increase in the region, with prices rising by more than 50 cents in one week.

Midwest

In the Midwest, diesel prices increased to $5.160 per gallon, up 19.0 cents from the previous week.

Although the increase was smaller than in other regions, prices remain elevated compared to last year.

Gulf Coast

The Gulf Coast average reached $5.134 per gallon, rising 29.9 cents week over week.

This region continues to have some of the lowest diesel prices in the country, but costs are still increasing.

Rocky Mountain

Diesel prices in the Rocky Mountain region climbed to $5.174 per gallon, an increase of 37.8 cents.

This marks one of the strongest weekly increases among all regions.

West Coast

The West Coast continues to report the highest diesel prices nationwide. The regional average rose to $6.310 per gallon, up 45.4 cents from the previous week.

  • West Coast, less California: $5.826 (up 46.6 cents)
  • California: $6.870 (up 44.2 cents)

California remains the highest-cost diesel market, with prices nearing $7 per gallon.

Gasoline Prices Also Move Higher

Gasoline prices increased during the same period. The national average reached $3.961 per gallon, rising 24.1 cents from the prior week.

Although gasoline remains less expensive than diesel, both fuel types are trending higher. This pattern may reflect broader pressure across energy markets.

Impact of Diesel Prices on Trucking

Rising diesel prices may increase operating costs for carriers and owner-operators. Fuel is one of the largest expenses in trucking, so even small increases can affect profitability.

In some cases, carriers may adjust rates or apply fuel surcharges. However, market demand and freight conditions may limit how much of those costs can be passed on.

As diesel prices continue to move higher, many in the industry may monitor weekly fuel data more closely.

Outlook for Diesel Prices

Recent increases suggest continued volatility in diesel prices. While future trends remain uncertain, current data points to ongoing pressure in the near term.

If diesel prices stay elevated, trucking companies may face continued cost challenges. Weekly fuel reports will remain an important tool for planning and budgeting.
