In a world where productsre constantly, in transit the overlooked heroes of our roads are the dedicated commercial truck drivers who tirelessly journey long distances and tackle challenging conditions to ensure the smooth operation of our supply chains. To recognize their commitment and bravery on the highways the Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company has been awarding the Goodyear Highway Hero Award for four decades. As Goodyear marks its anniversary the 2023 edition of this award is set to be grander and more impressive than ever.
Since 1983 the Goodyear Highway Hero Award has highlighted the deeds of truck drivers who exceed their regular duties to promote safety and welfare on the roads. These drivers serve as heroes on our highways. This award aims to honor their exceptional contributions to society.
Dave Beasley, Vice President of North America Commercial at Goodyear emphasizes the importance of these individuals; “Commercial truck drivers play a role, in our country and communities. The functioning of every aspect of our lives is made possible by a commercial truck driver.”
The anniversary of the Goodyear Highway Hero Award coincides with an event – Goodyear’s 125th anniversary.
To add a touch to this years award Goodyear has decided to choose two winners from a range of commercial drivers. This expansion ensures that more road heroes will have the opportunity to be acknowledged for their acts of courage and kindness.
From now, until December 31 2023 Goodyear is seeking nominations for truckers holding a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) who have displayed bravery and assistance to others while on the road regardless of the type of vehicle they drive – whether it’s a long haul truck, a dump truck or a regional delivery or vocational vehicle.
The recognition and prizes associated with the Goodyear Highway Hero Award underscore its significance. The chosen winners will receive rewards well as a special prize package from Goodyear. Additionally they will be given the chance to participate in a winner announcement event at the Technology & Maintenance Council (TMC) Annual Meeting & Transportation Technology Exhibition in New Orleans in March 2024 with their travel and accommodation expenses covered.
Alongside the winners up to four honorable mentions will also receive cash rewards and prize packages from Goodyear. These tokens of appreciation serve as recognition, for the deeds performed by these truck drivers.
When we talk about the significance of the Highway Hero Award we can take a look, at Andrew Waits years deserving winner. In a situation where a motorcyclist was ejected from their vehicle on a four lane highway Andrew skillfully positioned his tractor trailer to protect the injured individual from traffic. He then administered aid using his expertise as a volunteer firefighter until medical help arrived.
Recalling the event Andrew shared, “You never really know what you might encounter on any given day. This accident unfolded before my eyes. I had to act swiftly. I relied on my training. Instincts to assist those in distress during such a moment.” Andrews narrative showcases the deeds that the Goodyear Highway Hero Award seeks to honor and commemorate.
