In the trucking world, some rigs are truly special. The standout feature isn’t just their great mileage but also the love and care that each owner puts into them. One such remarkable truck is the 2003 Kenworth W900L, known as “Big Red,” owned by Adam Johnson of K&D Transport in Spring Valley, Wisconsin. With more than three million miles under its belt, this well-known truck remains steadfastly reliable, embodying resilience and high standards in hauling services everywhere.

The Story Behind Big Red

Adam Johnson bought “Big Red” in 2010, and it quickly became the crown jewel of K&D Transport’s 14-truck fleet. This beast runs with a mighty Signature 600 Cummins engine, paired with a smooth-shifting 13-speed transmission and dependable 3.55 rears for unmatched reliability on the road. Thanks to the sturdy 336-inch wheelbase, it keeps steady even with challenging cargo on board.

Unique Customizations

What truly sets “Big Red” apart are the many customizations. You can see Johnson’s commitment in these updates; he never misses the finer points that matter most. From the Lincoln Chrome bumper and exhaust to the Hogebuilt rear fenders and 12 Ga. Customs mirror brackets, visor, and battery box covers, every inch of “Big Red” is unique.

K&D Transport’s Specialty

K&D Transport specializes in hauling unique loads, including steel coils and palletized foam. Time after time, this 2003 Kenworth W900L has demonstrated its value by handling various tasks reliably. This isn’t merely a machine doing its job; it stands as proof of our fleet’s triumphs and hard-earned success.

A Major Overhaul to the 2003 Kenworth W900L

Recently, “Big Red” went through a major transformation. Before the 2023 Mayberry Truck Show in Mt. Airy, North Carolina, Johnson and his team spent five days rebuilding it. They gave the truck serious upgrades—a brand-new sleeper for comfort on long hauls, revamped the interior with modern touches, added a sturdy headache rack for safety, and finished everything off with a bright new paint job. This extensive upgrade shows Johnson’s passion for keeping “Big Red” running smoothly.

Safety First: The Headache Rack

One of the most important additions to “Big Red” is the new headache rack. Johnson believes in having these racks on all his trucks for safety and extra storage for flatbed equipment like tarps and chains. This practical addition underscores the importance of safety in K&D Transport’s operations.

Lighting Up the Road

When it comes to lighting, Johnson prefers a “less is more” approach. He likes to keep many lights hidden to create a subtle yet striking effect. Choosing the new Hero light range from RoadWorks for numerous company trucks clearly shows a commitment to boosting both aesthetics and protection standards.

The Heart of the Fleet

Beyond its performance and looks, “Big Red” holds a special place in Johnson’s heart. He calls it “the big daddy” of his fleet, a truck with significant sentimental value. It’s all about that special connection forged through endless journeys on the open road, where a trucker gets to know his rig like an old friend.

A Symbol of Dedication

In trucking, rigs like “Big Red” are more than just vehicles; they are symbols of dedication, hard work, and a commitment to excellence. As it keeps rolling down the highways, “Big Red” showcases what can be done with grit, a love for driving, and an unyielding spirit. Future truckers will surely find inspiration from it, and its legendary status will live on.
