Former President Donald Trump has chosen Ohio Senator J.D. Vance as his vice presidential candidate for the 2024 election. This decision highlights Trump’s ongoing support for the trucking industry, especially for owner-operators.
Senator J.D. Vance, in his second year as Ohio’s junior senator, has shown strong support for truck drivers. He co-sponsored the Truck Parking Safety Improvement Act (S.1034). This bill aims to create more safe parking spots for trucks across the US and improve existing parking areas.
Vance also supports the DRIVE Act (S.2671). This bill would stop the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) from making trucks use speed limiters. Many in the trucking industry believe speed limiters could make roads much less safe and reduce their efficiency.
Vance’s support for these bills has earned praise from the Owner-Operator Independent Drivers Association (OOIDA). This group fights for the rights and interests of truck drivers. George O’Connor, a spokesman for OOIDA, said that it is important to have someone who supports truckers advising the President.
Trump’s choice for new VP J.D. Vance has a diverse background. He served in the Marine Corps and fought in the Iraq War. He then went on to graduate from Ohio State University and Yale Law School. Vance is also the author of a bestselling book, Hillbilly Elegy, which was made into a Netflix movie.
Vance is known for his populist conservatism. He supports a Rail Safety Bill that Democrats are pushing after a train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio. However, he wants to end tax breaks for electric vehicles, including commercial trucks.
Trump’s choice of Vance as his running mate shows his commitment to truck drivers. In May 2020, Trump supported owner-operators protesting against brokers in Washington, D.C. The truckers were upset about unfair rates and market conditions worsened by the pandemic.
By picking Vance, Trump aims to appeal to truck drivers, a key group of his supporters. With Vance’s proven track record, the Trump-Vance team is ready to tackle important issues in the trucking industry, making it a key focus in the 2024 election.
