Granville County School Bus Driver Arrested for DWI, Child Endangerment

A Granville County Public Schools (GCPS) bus driver was arrested after police say she was driving while impaired (DWI) during her morning route. The arrest happened after the school reported that the bus was being driven erratically.

What Happened?

On Thursday, August 29, 2024, the Granville County Public Schools administration contacted the Creedmoor Police Department. They reported that one of their school buses was driving in an unsafe manner. The police quickly launched an investigation and arrested 45-year-old Lauren Coble, who was driving the bus. Police say she was driving while impaired in a commercial vehicle.

Coble now faces seven traffic charges, including impaired driving.

Bus Driver Faces Child Endangerment Charges

In addition to the DWI charge, Coble was charged with 53 counts of misdemeanor child endangerment. These charges reflect the number of students on the bus at the time of the incident. The charges are serious, as police believe she put the children in danger.

Police and School Response

Both the Creedmoor Police Department and the Granville County Public Schools have assured the public that student safety is their top priority. Creedmoor Police Chief Troy Wheless said, “Our department fully supports the administration of Granville County Public Schools and their commitment to ensuring the safety of our students and staff.”

Chief Wheless also emphasized the importance of holding people accountable when it comes to the safety of students. “We will work closely with the District Attorney’s Office to ensure that anyone who puts the safety and security of our students, staff, and members of the public at any of our schools at risk are held accountable for their actions,” he said.

School District’s Response

Granville County Public Schools acted quickly to address the situation. After receiving reports of unsafe driving, they immediately contacted law enforcement. The district is also expected to review the incident internally and ensure that proper safety protocols are in place for their transportation services.
