Saia, Inc. Reports Steady Growth in LTL Shipments and Tonnage for Q3 2024

Saia, Inc., a prominent player in the transportation sector, recently released its LTL shipment and tonnage data for the first two months of the third quarter of 2024. The data reveals notable growth in LTL shipments and tonnage, highlighting the company’s continued investment in its network and operational capabilities.

Saia LTL July 2024 Performance

In July 2024, Saia reported a significant increase in LTL shipments and tonnage compared to the same period last year. LTL shipments per workday rose by 10.6%, reflecting strong demand for Saia’s services. This increase in shipments is complemented by a 5.0% rise in LTL tonnage per workday, indicating a solid performance in the amount of freight moved.

However, there was a decrease in LTL weight per shipment, which fell by 5.0%, dropping from 1,401 pounds in July 2023 to 1,331 pounds in July 2024. This decline in weight per shipment suggests that while the number of shipments increased, the average weight of each shipment decreased, potentially pointing to a shift in the types of goods being transported or changes in customer shipping patterns.

Saia LTL August 2024 Performance

August 2024 also saw positive trends for Saia, with LTL shipments per workday increasing by 7.0% compared to August 2023. The company recorded an 8.2% rise in LTL tonnage per workday, indicating a strong month for freight movement. Unlike July, August showed a slight increase in LTL weight per shipment, which grew by 1.2%, from 1,339 pounds in August 2023 to 1,354 pounds in August 2024. This uptick in weight per shipment suggests a slight recovery in the average weight of goods being transported, aligning more closely with the increased tonnage figures.

Quarter-to-Date Analysis

Looking at the quarter-to-date (QTD) figures for 2024 versus QTD 2023, Saia’s performance continues to show growth. LTL shipments per workday have risen by 8.5%, and LTL tonnage per workday is up by 6.6%. These figures underscore Saia’s ability to maintain a steady increase in freight volumes throughout the quarter. However, the LTL weight per shipment has decreased by 1.8%, indicating a continued trend of lower average shipment weights compared to the previous year.
