Cummins Receives $75 Million for Zero-Emissions Project

Cummins Inc., a leading power solutions company, has received a $75 million grant from the Department of Energy (DOE). This money will help them convert part of their Columbus Engine Plant (CEP) in Indiana. The goal is to make zero-emissions parts and electric powertrain systems.

Big Investment in Clean Technology

Cummins is adding $75 million of its own money to match the DOE grant. This means a total of $150 million will be invested. The funds will change about 360,000 square feet of the existing plant space. This new space will produce battery packs, powertrain systems, and other parts for battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). This is part of Cummins’ Accelera business segment, which focuses on zero-emissions solutions.

New Jobs and Economic Boost

Cummins new green tech project is expected to create about 250 full-time jobs. Current workers will have the chance to move into these new roles. When the project is done, the CEP will have around 350 employees focused on BEV work. The plant, which opened in 1926, will use nearly half of its 1.42 million square feet for zero-emissions manufacturing.

Environmental Benefits

The electric powertrains made at CEP will help the environment. They are expected to cut about 104 million metric tons of carbon dioxide by 2030. This will help reduce global greenhouse gas emissions.
